Nepal’s Pasang Dawa Sherpa has made a unique record by climbing Mount Everest. He has become the second person in the world to climb Mount Everest for the 26th time on Sunday (May 14). Pasang Dawa Sherpa, 46, reached the summit of 8,849 meters (29,032 feet) around 9 am (local time) on Sunday morning and set a new record.
Government tourism officer Bigyan Koirala told that before this Kami Rita Sherpa has reached Mount Everest 26 times. Edmund Hillary of New Zealand and his Sherpa guide Tenzing Norgay conquered Mount Everest for the first time in 1953. An official of the hiking company Imagine Nepal Treks said that Pasang Dawa reached Everest here with a Hungarian tourist. They are now coming down from above and are in good condition.
‘Climbed for the 26th time at the age of 46’
Pasang Dawa Sherpa has created history by equaling the previous record for the highest climb of Mount Everest with Imagine Nepal. The company said in a statement that at the age of 46, Pasang successfully climbed the mountain for the 26th time. He equaled the record held by Kami Rita Sherpa of Imagine Nepal Treks & Expeditions.
‘Mount Everest was climbed for the first time in 1998’
Born in Pangboche, a village near Everest Base Camp (EBC), the 46-year-old Sherpa climber first scaled Everest in 1998. He has climbed Everest in 1999, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2016 and 2017. While he climbed Everest again in the years 2001, 2007, 2010, 2013, 2018, 2019 and 2022.
‘Pasang Dawa to be part of international team’
Along with Pasang Dawa, 5 tourists from Imagine Nepal from United Kingdom, United States, Hungary, China and Pakistan also reached the top of Mount Everest. All these people have become part of the first international team to reach the summit in the season.
‘Climbing started late this year due to bad weather’

‘Nepal issues record 478 permits this year’
This year Nepal is witnessing a large number of people who are interested in mountaineering. The tourism department has issued permits to 478 persons, the highest number on record. Nepal’s Tourism Department official Bigyan Koirala said that issuing permits for this season is almost over. Nepal had earlier issued a record 409 permits in 2021. A year later, due to the Russia-Ukraine war and the coming recession this year, this number decreased to 325.
‘It costs more to climb a mountain’
Foreign climbers are charged US$11,000 to obtain a permit for Mount Everest in Nepal, but climbing the mountain costs between US$40,000 and 90,000. Unfavorable weather adds to the cost of an expedition as it usually only lasts for two weeks in a year.
Since Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and New Zealand’s Edmund Percival Hillary first set foot on the world’s highest peak in May 1953, nearly 7,000 climbers have climbed Everest from the Nepalese side.

Who are Sherpas in Nepal?
Most of the people who guide in climbing Mount Everest write Sherpa before their name. They are known for their climbing skills and earn their living mainly by guiding foreign tourists in the mountains. Everest has been climbed more than 11,000 times since the first ascent in 1953 by Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay, according to the Himalayan database and Nepalese officials. About 320 people have died in this attempt.
