During the first Netflix Upfront on Wednesday, Netflix revealed that its advertising plan has nearly five million monthly active users worldwide.
This is the first time the company has disclosed figures for the new tier, which only thrown out six months ago, and the number is certainly remarkable. In March, Bloomberg reported that one million accounts signed up for Netflix’s ad-supported plan.
However, it’s important to note that monthly users are not necessarily subscribers, as some users are likely to share plans. netflix plans crack down on password sharing next month.
The company added during Wednesday’s presentation that the ad subscriber base has “more than doubled” since the beginning of this year. Netflix has a total of 232.5 million global subscribers.
Netflix’s pitch to advertisers included other interesting numbers regarding ad-supported offering. For example, the company revealed that 80% of viewing takes place on television screens. Additionally, 25% of Netflix subscriptions opt for the ad plan in countries where it is available, according to the company. The streamer noted that the average age of its ad-supported viewers is 34 years old.
Netflix recently updated its $6.99 per month plan by adding higher video quality (1080p resolution) and supporting two simultaneous streams. At launch, the plan only had 720p video quality and users could only view content on one device in a single view.
