Nvidia’s CEO hailed a new era of computing where “everyone is a programmer,” as the world’s most valuable semiconductor group unveiled a new supercomputer platform to stay at the forefront of the AI revolution.
In his first in-person public speech since the pandemic began, Jensen Huang warned that the traditional tech industry would not keep pace with TO THEadding that the technology had drastically lowered the barrier to entry to computer coding.
“Everyone is a programmer now. You just say something to the computer,” Huang said in Taiwan on Monday, describing the combination of accelerated computing and generative AI as “a reinvention from the ground up.”
He added, “We have reached the tipping point of a new computing age,” arguing that AI now allows people to create programs by simply entering commands.
ChatGPT can generate code, reducing the human labor required to create software, a development set to revolutionize programming.
Huang’s speech at the Computex conference in Taipei came days after Nvidia revealed speed predictions sales growthfueling a surge in the stock price that put it on course to become the world’s first trillion-dollar semiconductor stock.
The chipmaker’s stock price has soared 172% year-to-date as Open AI’s ChatGPT explosion has rekindled investor enthusiasm for generative AI.
Demand has soared for Nvidia’s data center chips, including the H100, an advanced graphics processing unit (GPU) that substantially reduces the time it takes to train so-called large language models like ChatGPT.
The large amount of open source software available online has also provided a fertile training ground for code-generating AI systems. OpenAI’s Codex system, trained in part on open source software, offers software developers suggestions on which lines of code to write next.
GitHub, a Microsoft service for developers that leverages Codex, said the platform has cut the time it takes to create new code in half, a huge leap in efficiency after a decade of largely ineffective efforts to bolster productivity.
Huang also announced a new AI supercomputer platform called the DGX GH200 to assist tech companies in building generative AI models similar to OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
Meta, Microsoft and Google Cloud are among the first customers expected to gain access to the supercomputer.
Taiwan-born Huang has unveiled a powerful new GPU for gaming and an AI platform for developers to create games with online avatars that mimic player behaviors.
“This is the future of video games. The AI will contribute to the rendering and synthesis of the environment, but it will also animate the characters,” she said.
Nvidia also announced a tie-up with Japan’s SoftBank to bring its super chip to the tech group’s data centers in the country, as it seeks to incorporate data center operators’ reliance on its products.
Nvidia’s success in developing products to power advances in artificial intelligence has put it in the crosshairs of US export controls designed to curb Chinese technological progress.
Washington banned shipments of the A100 chip — the H100’s predecessor — to China last October as it expanded trade restrictions on specific blacklisted companies.
financial time reported that sanctioned Chinese AI companies had continued to access A100 chips via third-party data centers, underscoring the challenge of limiting trade in critical components.
Huang was born in Tainan City in southern Taiwan before moving to the United States, where he co-founded Nvidia in 1993 after working as a microprocessor designer at Advanced Micro Devices.
