When my friends sent a video of their little robotic lawn mower bumping across long, flat grass, I was skeptical. How could a device the size of a small tire cut a large lawn? Good, husqvarna makes mowers that can, quite accurately, and has been during years. While the robot won’t be able to trim edges succinctly like a weed mulcher, it will get you a well-manicured lawn with very little effort. It cuts blades and mulch to save you the labor of constantly emptying a storage bin.
The limitations involve the installation of a nailed wire around the entire perimeter of the lawn. Also, automatic mowers are less reliable than walk-behind or drive-through mowers on steeper inclines. And like a robotic vacuum, it can’t remove toys, chairs and hoses that are in its way. Obstacles must be removed before it leaves the charging station. Lastly, separate areas of grass divided by a driveway or sidewalk cannot be covered. Otherwise, the device is quite complete.
The biggest drawback? Price. For an urban garden, the residential Automower 115H (4G) costs $700, and to cover a larger suburban lawn, the wider Automower 415X costs $2,000. While cheaper brands may fit your needs just fine, Husqvarna has been perfecting garden tools for decades and has a reputation for being tough. I’d say it’s worth it, but the key is finding an automatic lawn mower that works for your yard and your budget.
