Neal Persten was recognized as Margate Small Business Owner of the Year. {David Volz}
Neal Persten has a passion for pizza and helping others.
As owner of Big Daddy’s Pizza and Sandwicheshas provided pizza to local hospitals and first responders.
At its Nov. 20 meeting, the Margate Commission recognized Persten as Small Businesswoman of the Year for her efforts.
“I’ve been running this restaurant since 2006. I work every day and put in 70 to 90 hours a week,” Persten said.
To help families in need, Persten will serve turkey, mashed potatoes and green beans from 1 to 3 pm on Thanksgiving Day.
“I do this because I want to help people in the community,” Persten said.
Commissioner Tommy Ruzzano presented the award to Persten and said he is a good personal friend who has done many positive things in the community.
According to Ruzzano, Big Daddy’s was one of the few restaurants open during Hurricane Sally in 2020, which encouraged residents to shop at Margate stores and restaurants, especially on small business Saturdays.
Mayor Arlene Schartz said Persten has made a positive difference in the community and deserves recognition.

Big Daddy’s is located at 407 North State Road 7.
Hours are Monday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Tuesday to Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m.
