The Labor Leader westminster council Adam Hug has written to 19 US owners and long-term tenants of US candy store, vape shop or souvenir shop locations and has “named and shamed” the owners who did not respond.
The letter, seen by the Standard, says: “The recent rise in these shops is diminishing the value of our local high streets, both financially and reputationally: they risk the recovery of the West End and its property value. We have spent over a year disrupting store activities, seizing over £1m worth of illegal goods and working with HMRC and others to investigate these business further.
“This damaging situation has gone on long enough and we ask you to do everything you can to end it.”
The letter, sent in March, continues: “We want to be as constructive as possible, but if we don’t hear from you after this letter by April 21, 2023, we will consider what additional publicity is needed around the owners’ failings. take some action on it.”
The council said it has seen an encouraging response with six landlords notifying tenants or bringing in different retailers. But 10 who did not respond “positively” were named by Westminster on Wednesday.
Hug said high-end retailers were “queuing up to come back” so it “seems like an auspicious time to draw attention to tacky tattoo shops.”
There are 26 sweet and souvenir shops on Oxford Street who collectively owe around £9m in unpaid business fees. The council has recovered hundreds of thousands of pounds in arrears through court action, but the ownership structure of the shops is often secret.
Business standards have also seized assets, including illegal vaporizers and counterfeit designer brands.
