There is an “X” deep in the woods. It marks a place called “Overlanding”, and every manufacturer with a four-wheel drive product is trying to get there, from van manufacturers to UTV manufacturers. Toyota has his new 2024 Tacoma Overland trim as the first icon. Polaris has its new Xpedition line as an icon of the latter. These are still UTVs (or side by side) as you understand them. Polaris Vice President Reid Wilson said: “Our goal was to bridge the worlds of traditional side-by-sides and overlanding with a vehicle that enables passionate adventurers to go further and deeper than ever before and discover destinations and experiences. brand new.” The differences between these and something like the Polaris General XP4 1000 Ultimate are in slightly more capability and the fact that Polaris has done a lot of the outfitting work for you.

There’s a two-seater Xpedition, but it can accommodate up to five people instead of the General’s maximum of four, for example. And every Xpedition is powered by the new 114-horsepower 999cc Polaris Pro Star Gen 2 engine, instead of the General’s 100-hp ProStar. The Xpedition has a 12.5-gallon tank, the largest in the Polaris lineup, offering a potential range of more than 200 miles on a fill-up. For a smoother ride over that distance, Fox Podium QS3 shocks replace the Walker Evans shocks featured on other Polaris models. 30-inch Pro Armor Crawler XP tires help provide 14 inches of ground clearance and can turn through 14 inches of travel in the front and 15 inches in the rear. A 4,500-pound-capacity winch sits at the front of each model, and all can haul just over 1,000 pounds in beds, and two 2,000-pound ones.

There are variants of the Xpedition, XP and ADV, in three versions each, either Premium, Ultimate or Northstar. XP models are like short-bed trucks, known for their exposed 30-inch beds that can tip and tip. Just ahead of those beds, the XP’s 60/40 split-folding rear seats offer additional storage space as you enter the cabin. ADV models are more like SUVs, with 36-inch enclosed beds that don’t tilt. The fold-flat seats in the ADV open up 63 inches of storage space when folded down. The beds in both models measure 48 inches wide with 16-inch-high sides. And this is the first model to get the company’s new Lock & Ride Max charging system.

Trims are distinguished by features, not performance. The entry-level Premium gets a 600-watt magneto to keep the vehicle and accessories charged, a 4.3-inch dash display, and a JBL TrailPro 2000 audio system. The Ultimate and Northstar upgrade the magneto to 900-watts and upgrade the dashboard to a seven-inch touchscreen running Polaris’ RideCommand software. The top two versions also feature JBL TrailPro 4100 enhanced audio with surround sound, a 400-watt amplifier, and a 10-inch subwoofer. More appearance convenience features appear with the padded dash, tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, and front and rear cameras.

The NorthStar version goes all out with the Pro Shield enclosed cockpit. The ability to seal out the elements means this trim offers dual-zone climate control, full locking doors, power windows and a reclining glass windshield.

The plugin catalog is considerable from the jump. An available Rhino-Rack can support a static load of 500 pounds or a dynamic load of 150 pounds. Five accessory kits group specific products for various uses: Hunting, Kayak, Overland, Trail and Utility.

The equipment prices of the Xpedition XP in two-seater/five-seater versions are:

  • Premium: $28,999 / $32,999
  • Ultimate: $31,999 / $35,999
  • North Star: $38,999 / $43,999

The ADV version adds $1,000 to these prices. The Ultimate and Northstar trims start arriving in showrooms this fall, the Premium trim doesn’t arrive until early 2024.
