Polytag receives £100,000 Small Business Research Initiative funding for recycling innovation project — Retail Technology Innovation Hub

Developed in partnership with Welsh company EBS, the four new Plastic Detection Units aim to provide a complete picture of the recycling landscape through their strategic deployment at MRFs estimated to support a number of council districts looking to increase household waste recycling.

The scheme is an opportunity for Welsh businesses and major brands to gain insight into the entire lifecycle of their product packaging, from production to disposal, and ultimately measure how much is recycled.

Polytag will also work with several regional and national brands to integrate their UV watermarks with their GS1-approved consumer QR codes, creating a digital trail to track packaging throughout the recycling process, at the barcode level.

Alice Rackley, CEO of Polytag, said: “This partnership is another notable step by the Welsh Government towards a fully circular economy. Wales has been a leader in this area for years and Polytag is privileged to become a bigger part of this.”

“This funding will enable us to deploy our award-winning technology at four key sites that record large amounts of waste and recycling in Wales and will help provide invaluable data that will enable brands to take responsibility for their packaging.”

“We were originally a Welsh startup and we are passionate about supporting like-minded businesses and government initiatives. This funding is just the first step in supporting the work Wales is already doing to increase recycling rates and opening the door for brands who want to know when, where and how much of their packaging is recycled.”
