Porsche has partnered with Mobileye, the autonomous driving unit that Intel became a public company last year, to bring hands-free autoassist and navigation features to future sports cars, the companies said Tuesday.
In the upcoming collaboration, the Mobileye brand’s SuperVision technology platform will serve as the basis for advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) in future Porsche vehicles. SuperVision enables cars to follow navigation routes, autonomously change lanes and automatically pass slower vehicles on multi-lane roads, according to Mobileye. The company even boasts that its system allows drivers to take their hands off the wheel on certain types of roads, as long as they remain visually alert in case they need to take control of the vehicle. SuperVision relies on a series of cameras and supporting radar to sense the surrounding environment.
The partnership comes several months after Porsche parent Volkswagen and Ford they took out their investments at the autonomous vehicle technology company Argo AI, resulting in the shutdown of the startup. Argo was developing Level 4 autonomous vehicle technology, which would allow the vehicle to handle all aspects of driving under certain conditions without human intervention, according to SAE.
The company had already started alliances with Lyft to offer public robotaxi services in various cities. However, the services still did not charge passengers, and the road to the market for robotic taxis grew longer and muddier by the day. Ford and VW decided to prioritize short-term gains from ADAS over incredible gambles like full-scale range.
When Volkswagen finalized its deal with Argo AI, reportedly expanded its cooperation with Mobileye. Cariad, VW’s software unit already had a relationship with Mobileye to develop highly automated and autonomous driving technologies. Cariad is also working with Bosch, Qualcomm and China’s Horizon Robotics for the same purposes.

This technology will help us move forward with our strategy of modern and sporty luxury,” Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche, said in a statement. “We are combining an exceptional product with a very personal experience. The wishes and lifestyles of our customers are important to us. We want to exceed expectations time and time again.”
Porsche will fully integrate Mobileye’s ADAS into its future models. The company’s internal engineers will develop custom systems to control driver attention, according to Mobileye.
“In most situations, drivers will still want to drive a Porsche themselves in the future, and they will be able to do so at any time,” said Michael Steiner, Porsche R&D board member and head of development at the VW Group. . “That being said, there are certain aspects of partially automated driving that interest us. Intelligent systems such as Mobileye SuperVision technology can help the driver in everyday situations, for example by not having to keep their hands on the wheel all the time in traffic jams. .”
Porsche did not say when customers would see Mobileye technology in future models, nor which models would feature SuperVision. The company said other VW Group brands will be able to adopt SuperVision as a platform solution.
