Prince Andrew has no intention of leaving his Royal Lodge home because he still has 80 to 90 years left on his lease, according to reports.
King Charles, 74, is believed to have asked his younger brother to move out of the 30 rooms. Windsor mansion, where he has lived for the past 20 years.
The property has reportedly been earmarked for the Prince and Princess of Welsh and their three children.
But a royal source denied that Andrew, 63, was preparing to leave the 98-acre property and will instead look at the lease he signed in 2003.
The palace source told The Times: “The lease is in the duke’s name, so no one can take it away from him.”
“It has never been suggested that they can remove it. It is a long term lease with 80 to 90 years remaining.
“This is a lease between him and the Crown Estate. That’s not the King’s business. It is a matter for the Minister of Finance. The only way to get him to move would be through an arrangement: he would have to agree.”
He follows reports that the King plans to cut a £250,000 annual grant his brother received from the Queen. King Charles is in control of the £652 million Privy Purse.
Andrew, who has been dependent on the allowance since leaving royal frontline duties in 2019, moved into the Grade II listed house in Windsor Great Park following the Queen Mother’s death in 2002.
The lease required Andrew to carry out, at his own expense, renovations estimated at £7.5 million.
It also provided for the payment of a £1 million premium to the Crown Estate.
Under the terms of the deal, approved by the National Audit Office, the duke cannot benefit financially from any increase in the property’s value, as the freehold belongs to the Crown Estate.
