Did you know that 97 per cent or 473,043 businesses in Queensland are small businesses employing fewer than 20 people?

Queensland is home to a strong community of small businesses that are the backbone of the state’s economy while contributing significantly to their respective communities. From charming cafes and shops to innovative tech startups and independent contractors, carpenters to electricians and masons to plumbers, there are countless entrepreneurs who have taken their skills, knowledge and expertise and turned them into successful businesses. This sees small businesses making their mark on local regions with diversity and financial support.

Small businesses play a vital role in the construction industry. They not only contribute to the growth of the economy, but also create employment opportunities for the local community. Small businesses are known for their flexibility, adaptability and personal service that larger companies may not be able to provide.

They often have a personal connection to the community and are committed to providing quality products and services that build long-lasting relationships with their customers. Therefore, supporting small businesses in construction not only benefits the economy, but also promotes a sense of community and strengthens local relationships.

Within Awesome Women in Construction (AWIC) we have several small businesses across Queensland who are committed to providing personalized products and services and who support their local communities. To all of you we say thank you.

I’d also like to take a moment to thank all the small businesses that keep Queenslanders busy. You are the AMAZING women and men who get up before sunrise and make sure we have what we need for the day ahead. The coffee on the way to work, our lunch when we’ve left ours on the kitchen counter and the handbag we bought at the markets when it made us smile.

This May, the Queensland Government is celebrating small businesses and the important contribution they make to our economy and communities across the state. Not only do they celebrate small businesses, they also provide a variety of incredible resources to help you and your business grow.

One of these resources is the Mentoring for Growth (M4G) program. I joined the program and it was the best decision I ever made. I was matched with business experts who helped me develop a better understanding of business processes. Their advice and leadership have helped me run the successful business I have today.

Whether you want to support local businesses or start your own venture, there is no shortage of opportunities to connect with the small business community in this beautiful state.
