A Conservative MP has called for renters to be offered affordable housing in tourist hotspots if they can prove they are local.
During a debate in the House of Commons on short term holiday rentals, East Devon MP Simon Jupp (pictured) suggested councils could be allowed to set aside a percentage of new construction for people with a local family or economic connection to an area.
The tenant or buyer would have to prove one of the following conditions: currently lives or works within 25 miles of the property, was born within 25 miles of the property, or could demonstrate a care network within 25 miles of the property property.
A compact would permanently protect a percentage of any new home stock for short-term rental or second home ownership.

“Certainly we need to build new houses in East Devon, but first we must try to look after the locals,” Jupp said. “The government can be creative and proactive in looking at all possible options; Only then will there be a better balance”.
An amendment to the Level Up and Regeneration Bill would introduce a registration scheme for short-term rentals and a consultation on how it would work closes 7he June.
There are also plans to restrict the ways in which houses can be converted to short-term rentals by incorporating new development rights allowed so that councils can limit their use in geographic areas with the highest number of short-term rentals.
