Renters’ Reform Bill to be published next week

The anticipated Renters’ Reform Bill – which contains measures to ban Section 21 evictions – will be published after the King’s coronation next week.

The bill should also strengthen Section 8 eviction powers, introduce a property portal, require privately rented properties to meet the Decent Homes Standard, as well as establish a new ombudsman to deal with issues around private landlords.

Michael Gove, housing secretary told Sky News: “We’re introducing new legislation, it will be out next week and it will change the way in which the relationship between landlords and tenants work, providing tenants with new protection which should ensure that they’re better protected from arbitrary rent increases.”

The bill has been talked about since 2019, while the government has been subject to criticism over how long it’s taken to bring it to parliament.

Timothy Douglas, head of policy and campaigns at agency industry body, Propertymark, said: “This announcement and the long awaited introduction of legislation from the UK Government to reform the private rented sector in England will help bring much needed clarity for letting agents and their landlords.

“The Legislation is likely to focus on improving standards and the quality of property in the sector so Propertymark will be scrutinising the proposals, pushing for amendments where necessary and championing the role of letting agents to ensure the reforms are workable and fit for purpose.”

Ben Beadle, chief executive of the National Residential Landlords Association, tweeted: “Secretary of State Michael Gove confirms that we will see the long-awaited Renters Reform Bill next week. A fun week ahead beckons!”
