Scout Campers’ Tuktut finally becomes a home for compact vans

Scout Campers turned three this March. The camper van manufacturer will launch in 2020 with the Olympic for full size truckshe Yo Ho for the middle ones, and the kenai for heavy equipment. The ensemble didn’t celebrate their entry into The Terrible Threes much, so perhaps we can consider the new tuktut caravan a belated gift to himself. Like his siblings, it is named after a pristine natural spot, Tuktut Nogait National Park in Canada. Unlike its siblings, this one is made for trucks with smaller beds, contingent five-foot-count models like the Forest ranger and Dissident, jeep gladiator, toyota tacomaand chevrolet colorado/gmc cannon.

The upside is that the aluminum and fiberglass construction and diminutive scale return a diminutive 634 pounds dry weight. Max Outside Width is 72.25″, Outside Width at Bed is 41.5″, Outside Height is 72.25″, Inside Floor Length is 59.6″. The Tuktut also keeps it very slim by being quite bare. Scout calls it “Nothing but the Basics,” which means no wires, no plumbing, no tanks, no batteries Incorporated. Buyers get a 22-inch door, heated panel glass windows with screens and blinds, ratchet tie-downs, and a 69.6-inch by 47.5-inch standard bed mattress. The brochure says it can fit two people, but we recommend you don’t mind curling up like eels. Optional Portaledge Bunk Bed Extensions convert the mattress into a thick horseshoe that provides 80 inches of lengthwise space to lie on.

Scout’s idea is that buyers can turn the blank canvas into whatever kind of stark home they want. As we see more outdoor manufacturers do it, like Polaris with the Xpedition UTVs, Scout teamed up with Goose Gear to create gear packs made for different types of outdoor people, from the minimalist to the DIYer.

Thing is, the Tuktut starts at $16,500 and Goose Gear’s power module is $995, which doesn’t include the cost of the portable power station the power module is designed for. Another kit like the Goose Gear Drawer with Steps is $1,395; the complete drawer module costs $2,395. It would be extremely easy to bump the price of the Tuktut up to the $24,000 starting price of the much larger Scout Olympic that comes with a 175-watt solar panel, power station, propane tank, locker, smoke detectors, LED lights and room for four

However, if you have a compact truck, you’re like, ahem, in a box, if you want a rigid-sided winter RV that doesn’t consume the full payload capacity or GVWR of the truck and leave your tow free hitch. Scout is taking orders now, a $500 deposit gets an order going and initial deliveries are scheduled for Q3 of this year.
