Searching for a Family Feast in Senegal That Tastes Like Home

This summer, I found myself drawn to Senegal. I had recently relocated from the Bahamas to Brooklyn and was yearning for community. I’d gotten to know some very cool Senegalese people who rhapsodized about their country.

The way they talked about the place, the food, the drink, captivated me. I was especially intrigued by descriptions of poulet yassa, a Senegalese meal that reminded me of steamed chicken, a soul-warming Bahamian dish that my mom would make.

I wondered, Would yassa taste like home?
