Shared Prosperity Fund donates £1m to North Yorkshire

Small and micro businesses can receive between £1,000 and £10,000 towards schemes that increase business growth, productivity and resilience.

The second round of grants, administered by North Yorkshire Council, follows the distribution of £750,000 last year.

Selby videographer Alex Brown has been awarded £4,300 for new camera equipment, including a drone, to expand and improve his services.

Because of this, he landed two assignments from a German international television news channel, a job he could not have done before because his old camera did not meet the station’s requirements.

Brown said: “The fact that it has a better camera, approved by Netflix, means people will get a better product.

“I’ve already had two jobs that I just wouldn’t have been able to do if I didn’t have the funds, so it’s fantastic.”

Micro businesses with fewer than 10 employees and small businesses with fewer than 50 employees can also access free support beyond the grant through the council’s business advice teams and the York and North Yorkshire Growth Hub.

North Yorkshire’s economy is heavily skewed towards smaller businesses and there are over 32,700 micro, small and medium-sized businesses along with 90 large businesses in the county.

Council Leader and Chairman of the SPF Board in North Yorkshire, Cllr Carl Les, said: “We are delighted to open this grant scheme once again after seeing such positive uptake in the first round.

“Hundreds of small businesses have applied for funding and accessed support, and we look forward to working with even more this year, including sole traders, start-ups, home-based businesses and social enterprises, as well as landlords and people looking to diversify their farming businesses and limited companies. .

“This time we have allocated even more funding to the scheme to make it bigger and better, and we have used what we learned last year to improve the application process. “Our ambition is to see a wide range of applications seeking to make lasting improvements to our small and medium-sized businesses across the county.”

To help businesses with their applications, York and North Yorkshire Growth Hub, with its Enterprise Cube partners, has organized two webinars on writing a business plan and cash flow forecast taking place on the 16th and 17th. of May.
