The Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad, defended that the “mini-crisis” caused by the Government’s initiative to tax international purchases led more foreign companies, such as the e-commerces Shein, Aliexpress and Shopee, to adhere to the compliance plan of the Federal Revenue, to act in accordance with Brazilian law.

The minister admitted that the government may review the import tax rate, currently at 60%, which is levied on the so-called customs value: the sum of the price of the merchandise, freight and insurance, if any.

“Can you no longer charge a 60% rate (import tax)? It may no longer work, we have to renegotiate, ”he said.

For him, the discussion must now be expanded to encompass states, retail and markets, and include a debate on appropriate fees to ensure fair competition in retail.

“We cannot put the Brazilian retail sector at risk due to unfair practices by foreign companies,” Haddad said in an interview with GloboNews, recalling that the sector is a great generator of jobs and denying that the government discredited the Treasury in the action.

The minister pondered that the Federal Revenue has yet to define with the States, which charge ICMS in a disorganized manner, a fiscal solution, and that a provocation should be made within the National Council for Finance Policy (Confaz) for the development of agreements with Unity.

In addition, to promote fair competition between domestic and foreign companies, the government is studying what isonomic conditions it can provide to the markets.

The role of the Post Office itself, which is the gateway for orders, will be analyzed to see how the state company can collaborate to avoid illegalities.

“If I don’t want to take risks, I won’t be Finance Minister. I will face all the problems that pass under my nose, including this one,” Haddad said, criticizing predecessors who did not take action on the matter.
