The SRA’s 2023-2024 budget and business plan consultation proposes a 12% budget increase, which could affect companies already facing inflationary pressures, it said today the Law Society of England and Wales.

In response to the consultation, launched in May, the Law Society welcomes a continued focus on:

  • equality, diversity and inclusion
  • technology and innovation
  • anti money laundering (AML)

“The SRA’s continued focus on these areas aligns with our own priorities,” said Lubna Shuja, president of the Law Society.

“The SRA, which continues to improve its collection of diversity data for individuals and businesses, will go some way to assisting with collaboration in this area.

“The program aims to address the retention and advancement of women and people of Black, Asian and ethnic minority backgrounds.”

On the increase in the SRA’s budget, Lubna Shuja commented: “The SRA is proposing a significant increase in its budget. With many companies facing inflationary pressures, it is critically important that the SRA focus on efficiency savings and keep costs in check to avoid unnecessary pressure on the practice certificate fee.”

Commenting on technology and innovation, Lubna Shuja said: “The SRA intends to collaborate with small law firms and technology providers, which is useful.

“However, procurement standards, such as information about technology functionality, risks, and benefits, are necessary for all businesses.

“Transparency in metrics and success rates, ongoing support provisions, and accessibility features would benefit the entire legal services industry.

On AML, Lubna Shuja said: “We are committed to working with the SRA to ensure a risk-based and effective approach to the AML regime.

“Given constantly changing legislation and rapidly evolving and expanding regulatory requirements, it is important that the SRA works closely with the Law Society to help ensure that members of the profession have the most effective support possible to comply with obligations”.
