Rishi Sunak has reaffirmed his commitment to achieving net zero emissions in the UK by 2050, despite facing criticism from the head of the independent committee advising the government on climate targets. Sunak made the announcement during an interview on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, stating that he believes in the goal of net zero and is determined to reach it.
However, his recent speech announcing a delay in the ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars from 2030 to 2035 has been met with mixed reactions. Ford criticized the change in automobile policy, while Jaguar Land Rover described it as a pragmatic decision.
The flexibility of the timeline for the replacement of gas boilers has also been increased, and the subsidy for boiler scrapping has been raised.
The Labour Party has expressed its intention to reinstate the original 2030 ban, with Ed Miliband arguing that the delay will result in added costs for families.
Despite the criticism and differing opinions, Sunak remains optimistic about the UK’s ability to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.
