TULARE, Calif. (KFSN) — Inside The Grind Martial Arts Academy on Bardsley Avenue in Tulare, you’ll see little ones learning jujitsu and adults learning self-defense moves.
For owner David Valdez, it’s humbling and rewarding to do something he’s passionate about every day.
“I’ve been practicing jujitsu for 22 years, so it’s about time,” he said.
As of 2022, it offers multiple programs, including the Bully Proof Camp, where students learn more than moves.
“More than any art form, we are martial artists and we want discipline and self-respect,” Valdez said. “We want children to have confidence in themselves and the courage to stand up for those who don’t.”
Brielle Quirarte, 11, known as “Queen,” says she has learned a lot and is grateful that her father signed her up about a year and a half ago.
She has found a passion for jujitsu, competes in regional competitions and is ready to defend herself if necessary.
“It’s a little stressful because I don’t want to hurt people; that’s not the person I am,” she said.
Another option is self-defense classes for adults.
Four women practiced their moves Friday morning with self-defense trainer Monique Morales, who says these skills can save lives.
“You should be able to walk around knowing that you can take care of yourself if you need to, and that strengthens you not only as an adult, but also as a child,” he said.
Valdez’s ultimate goal is for everyone who enters his gym to feel a sense of safety, belonging and respect.
