Researchers at Bird & Co, the UK repossession law firm, have identified the European countries that UK residents Google most often to move abroad, with Spain topping the lists.
UK citizens have been experiencing increasing economic pressure and uncertainty brought on by the continued rise in house prices and the cost of living crisis. As a result, and based on Bird & Co’s research, it appears that a number of people are contemplating moving abroad, perhaps in search of a more attractive and financially comfortable lifestyle.
The lawyers analyzed Google search data from UK residents, using the search terms “move to [country name] from UK” for all 44 European countries. The data showed the estimated average monthly search volume over the past 12 months, revealing the areas of greatest interest to UK citizens.
The ten most searched countrieswith the estimated average monthly search volume for the last 12 months, were:
- Spain – 1,600
- Ireland and Portugal – 800
- France – 700
- Germany – 500
- Switzerland – 450
- Norway – 400
- Italy and Greece – 350
- Netherlands – 300
Bird & Co partner and property director Daniel Chard said of the research: “Based on recent findings, Spain has become the most sought after country for UK residents looking to move abroad. The current cost of living crisis in the UK, coupled with the more affordable standard of living in Spain, could be the reason for this trend.
historical ties
“Spain’s stable economy and housing market may be a safer investment for prospective homeowners, especially given the daunting UK mortgage rates. Plus, the warmer climate there makes it an attractive location for those looking to relocate.
“Ireland and Portugal are also emerging as popular destinations, with relatively simple immigration and residency options. Since the UK’s departure from the European Union, some people may be exploring new relocation options.
“Ireland’s status as an EU member state and its close cultural and historical ties to the UK may make it an attractive alternative place to live. Furthermore, while Ireland has its own language and unique cultural identity, the fact that English is the universally spoken language could make it a popular and feasible relocation destination for some UK residents wishing to relocate.
“British citizens looking to relocate may also find attractive prospects in the French property market, thanks to its wide variety of housing options and a moderate and steady increase in house prices. Furthermore, Germany is a prime destination, offering job opportunities and having one of the largest economies in Europe, and with a substantially lower cost of living than the UK.
“With ongoing economic uncertainty caused by factors like rising interest rates and the cost of living crisis, many people may feel insecure about their financial future and look elsewhere for more affordable options.
“In addition, the stability of the housing market in other countries and the more affordable prices of living may be more attractive for some people looking to buy a property.”
