Spotify expands AI-powered DJ feature to UK & Ireland

Spotify is rolling out its AI feature called “DJ” to premium customers in the UK and Ireland. The feature is aimed at music discovery and plays selected music with AI-powered English commentary. In many ways, using AI DJ is like listening to a radio DJ.

The company first launched this feature in february for premium subscribers in the US and Canada. The feature is powered by OpenAI technology and is still in beta, so there may be some technical issues.

After the launch of the feature, the company noticed that Gen Z was enjoying the new DJ feature, as they made up 87% of DJ users. Additionally, the company found that people who use AI DJ on any given day will spend 25% of their listening time with the feature.

Spotify said the DJ’s voice is modeled after the company’s head of cultural partnerships, Xavier “X” Jernigan. For example, he noted that users who tune in will find out that Arlo Parks will release his new album “My Soft Machine” at the end of the month. Eventually, Spotify could use this feature as a new revenue stream to promote new releases on the platform.

During the launch of the feature at Spotify’s Stream On event, the company said that AI DJ is boosted by its acquisition of Sonatic in 2022 in addition to OpenAI technology.

The DJ automatically plays tracks, but users can tap the AI DJ button to switch between moods or genres. Like any AI-assisted technology, the feature learns more about your choices as it listens more.

The AI DJ feature is available on both iOS and Android. You can access through streaming music playing on the DJ card.
