THE 1500 ram it is now the oldest design among the Detroit half-ton pickup trucks, but thanks to its solid internals and competitive mechanics, the current model is under no serious pressure to improve. While this may be a signal to Stellantis that it could continue for a few more model years without making any significant changes to its bread-and-butter pickup, Ram’s engineers appear to be hard at work doing just the opposite. In fact, some elements of the new electric Ram REV – especially including the passenger-side infotainment screen – may just come to the petroleum model with this update, expected no earlier than the 2025 model year.
Not only has Ram already shown us that it plans to integrate a passenger screen inside the Ram REV, but exactly As its designers plan to do so (above right). The way the camouflage sits inside this prototype (left) suggests a slightly different passenger-side dashboard piece with a ridge along the top, rather than the rounded waterfall design of the REV. This would preserve the existing trim on the lower half of the dashboard while simultaneously making room for a similarly sized screen on the upper half. We could misinterpret this, but we’re betting a passenger-side screen is implemented one way or another. Watch this space.
Elsewhere, this prototype hints at the typical cosmetic updates we’ve come to expect from a mid-cycle refresh. New front and rear bumpers are practically needed, and both are present. We can also expect attention to be paid to the various grille designs (especially if the front bumper changes dramatically), the headlights and the tailgate. It remains to be seen how much of this will end up being inspired by elements from Ram REV production.
