Labor leader Sir Keir Starmer will outline plans on Monday to get the NHS back on its feet if his party wins the next general election, pledging to cut waiting times and deaths from cancer, heart disease and suicide.

In a speech, Starmer will argue that the future of the NHS will be “at stake” in elections scheduled for next year, and warn that the health service is not sustainable unless there are “serious, profound and long-term changes”. they are done.

Starmer will be committed to meeting NHS cancer targets by ensuring patients are seen on time and diagnosed early. She will also promise to reduce deaths from heart disease and stroke by 25 percent within 10 years, reduce emergency room wait times and ensure that deaths from suicide decrease within five years.

The health service is a top concern for voters after months of union action and understaffing. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has made reducing NHS waiting times one of his five pledges as leader.

THE Financial Times reported over the weekend that medical professionals, including the Royal College of Radiologists, had written to health secretary Steve Barclay warning that cancer patients’ chances of survival were dwindling as treatment was delayed in England due to shortages of staff.

The letter warned that staffing levels had forced many hospital departments to make “tough decisions about whether to deny access to approved treatments or prioritize which patients can receive treatment within a safe time at the expense of others”.

Long waiting times for cancer patients were now “unfortunately routine,” the letter added, noting that for each month of delay, the risk of death increased by about 10%.

Overall, the waiting list for all inpatient treatment in England stood at register 7.3 million at the end of March, according to official data released this month, with nearly 360,000 people waiting for more than a year and just under 11,000 waiting for more than 18 months.
