Main findings:
- Hourly wage, hours worked per week and duration of the assignment. Median wages vary widely between occupations, from $17/hr for manufacturing workers to $71/hr for architects and engineers. Most agency workers reported a 40-hour work week. The median length of assignments ranges from 3 months for healthcare providers to 12 months for architects and engineers.
- Number of agencies. Agency workers usually register with only one agency, although a quarter of workers in five occupations reported two or more agencies.
- Length of temporary job and number of assignments to date. For the most part, temporary work careers seem to be limited experience, lasting about two to three years. However, in four professions, a quarter of temporary agency workers reported a temporary agency career of eight years or more. The typical (median) temp worker works 2-4 assignments during his temping career.
- Gender, age and race distribution of agency workers. The most male-dominated temporary work occupations are: architecture and engineering, and computer and math. The most female-dominated occupations are: office and administrative; healthcare providers; healthcare support; and education, training and library. For the most part, the age distribution was somewhat similar between occupations. The most racially diverse occupational categories are business and finance; computer and math; office and administrative support; and production, assembly and machine operator. The least racially diverse occupational category is the healthcare professional.
