Maybe electric car drivers would rather just admire your Porsche Taycan in the driveway instead of driving them.
That’s one of the conclusions of a new study iSeeCars on which electric vehicles have racked up the most miles driven over a three-year period. Topping the list is 2020 Tesla model Xclosely followed by three of his tesla siblings, Y-models3 and 5.
ending in 12he position in the study, which analyzed data from more than 860,000 three-year-old electric vehicles, was the star taycan. Also among the most intriguing conclusions was that iSeeCars found that the average EV was on the road for 9,059 miles per year, significantly less than the average gas-powered car, which drove 12,758 miles per year.
He Model X, a midsize family SUV with three rows of seats, was an anomaly among electric vehicles, racking up an average of 10,378 miles a year. Alternatively, the Porsche Accumulated 4,846 miles.
Teslas notwithstanding, the elephant in this cabin may be range anxiety.
That factor, according to iSeeCars analyst Karl Brauer, “continues to affect how consumers use their electric vehicles. Looking at three-year-old electric cars, we see that EV owners are willing to drive an additional 23 miles per year for every additional mile of range their vehicle offers. That means electric vehicles, on average, need an additional 161 miles of range to reach the 12,578-mile annual driving distance we see in traditional gasoline-powered vehicles.”
Brauer also points out that range anxiety “is less about being stranded in the middle of nowhere and more about the ‘refueling’ process for electric vehicles.” It’s essentially the convenience factor: “In a gasoline car, no matter how far you go, there are always plenty of refueling options, and the process takes five to 10 minutes. Until electric vehicles can offer that level of convenience at a comparable cost, they will be at a clear disadvantage in terms of usage and market demand.”
Brauer says vehicle price is certainly an issue (but one that could be mitigated eventually as EV and ICE prices catch up). “Three-year-old electric vehicles have an average price of $45,147, while three-year-old internal combustion cars cost an average of $30,760. This means that electric cars cost 47% more than conventional vehicles, but drive 29% less.”
Other factors may also enter into the study equations, including the possibility that EV owners could use a gasoline-powered vehicle to road trips or longer trips.
