The 13 Best Vacuum Cleaners: Carpets, Hardwood, and More

I just started using an app called tody to handle my household chores. It’s great because it gives you a little bar graph to see how long it’s been since you completed various tasks. This is how I know my floors are dirty. If you’re in the same boat as me, we need vacuum cleaners. Fortunately, there are some great sales going on right now.

The Dyson V15 Detect is our top pick for Dyson vacuums. Like most stick vacuums, it’s lightweight, easy to use, and powerful. But the Detect’s defining feature is its ability to highlight, via a green laser, and sense how much dust it’s picking up and adjust its suction power accordingly. It is ideal for people who suffer from allergies or simply want the floor as clean as possible.

For larger homes, our top Dyson pick is the Outsize+. It’s not much more powerful than the Detect, but it has a dustbin that’s 150% bigger, a cleaning head that’s 25% wider, and can run twice as long, all so it can cover a large area in less time and without having to recharge as frequently.

At the opposite end of the scale, the Dyson V12 Detect Slim (8/10, WIRED recommends) is our top pick for smaller spaces. It’s a bit cheaper than the full-size Detect, especially now, and it’s lightweight and easy to use. It lacks the smart capabilities of the full Detect, but if that’s not a big loss for you, this may save you some money.

The V10 Cyclone (8/10, WIRED recommends) is a bit older, but don’t let his age fool you. We loved it in 2018 and it still works just as well. It’s lightweight, has a generous dust bin, and can run for up to an hour on a single charge. The Cyclone V10 Animal is a small step forward that is designed for homes with a lot of pet fur to clean up.

Our favorite vacuum cleaner for homes with a lot of pet fur to clean is Dyson Animal 3 ball, which is currently not for sale. Our critic, Jaina Grey, however, owned her predecessor for nearly two decades before it faded away. The slightly older Ball Animal 2 even has a self-adjusting cleaner head that the 3 lacks, making this a great time to buy.

If you’re more into upright vacuums, or just want an inexpensive vacuum, then We recommend the Origin. When it’s on sale, anyway, like right now. It’s almost as powerful as Ball Animal 2 and comes with a stair tool and combo brush nozzle. It’s not as convenient as a stick vacuum, but when it’s on sale, it’s a heck of a lot cheaper.

Robot vacuum cleaner offers

Our The best option for robot vacuum cleanersthe Roborock Q5+ (9/10, WIRED recommends), is one of the best in the area. It avoids all the little annoyances of most robot vacuums, like getting stuck on strings or falling down stairs. It’s the easiest robot vacuum to set up and ignore that we’ve tested. If you’re shopping on Amazon, be sure to click the coupon button to get this deal.

This robot vacuum cleaner is our absolute best selection, with a couple of caveats. First off, it’s more expensive than our top overall pick and there are some valid concerns about Amazon’s data collection policies. It’s also worth noting that this vacuum is frequently available at this price. So it’s less that this is a sell, and more that it’s often a long-term anti-sell, but it’s safe to buy at this point.

The Samsung Jet Bot AI+ may be a big, ugly device, but it has a brain. In our tests, it had the best navigation of all the bots we tested, even guiding a sleeping 80-pound dog. It’s normally so expensive it’s in the four-figure range, but right now it’s at a substantial discount.

Shark AI Ultra 2 in 1 (8/10, WIRED recommends) surprised us after some previous less-than-stellar products from the company. But this model is now our top pick for a vacuum and mop combo. It uses laser navigation to map your home and can designate vacuum and mop zones. It worked great on both tasks, although you will have to switch between vacuuming and mopping between jobs.

When your pet makes a mess that a vacuum can’t clean up, this spot remover from Bissel is our favorite for smaller jobs. It’s cordless and portable, so there’s no need to lug it around like a reluctant suitcase. It works great to remove smudges and is even easy to clean the device.

Handheld vacuums aren’t as popular as they used to be, before stick vacuums were invented, but they’re still, you know, practical. And the Shark Wandvac is our top pick overall. It’s light and small, and has amazing suction for its size.

Technically, this could be a hair-styling tool, but it’s also part of the Dyson sale, and we like it too much not to include it. The Airwrap Multi-Styler (8/10, WIRED recommends) is easy to use with one hand, offers a variety of functions for different hair types, and uses less heat than many other stylers, so it does less damage to hair.
