Ford released Pricing for the 2024 Mustang in February. Ford has re-released pricing for some 2024 trim levels Mustang because the pony car is more expensive thanks to a gas consumption tax. Discussions in Mustang7G forum started talking on a Gas Consumption Tax (GGT) on the upcoming S650 Mustang after looking at order guides in late March. At the time, a poster wrote, “Does the ordering guide list this fee for the manual transmission at $1,000 and for the auto at $1,300?” It wasn’t until this month that Ford updated configurator prices to reflect the actual changes. The forum itself caught the changes, the automaker then confirmed to various outlets that the Mustang GT with the six-speed manual was levied with a $1,000 GGT. The Mustang Dark Horse with six-speed manual transmission AND The ten-speed car went up $1,300. The Dark Horse Premium goes up $2,800, or $1,300 GGT plus an additional $1,500. Ford representatives said the largest increase for Dark Horse Premium was “due to strong demand,” plus the gas consumption tax.
MSRPs for four-cylinder EcoBoost Mustangs do not change, but we are including those prices in the list below. The new sums after the $1,595 destination and their differences from the initial price are:
- Base EcoBoost: $32,515
- EcoBoost Award: $38,040
- Eco Boost Premium Convertible: $43,540
- GT: $44,090 ($1,000)
- GT Premium: $48,610 ($1,000)
- GT Premium Convertible: $54,110 ($1,000)
- Dark Horse: $60,865 ($1,300)
- Dark Horse Premium: $64,860 ($2,800)
Ford’s retail configurator does not mention GGT, instead folding that amount into the listed base price. For the Mustang GT, when a buyer chooses the ten-speed automatic transmission option that appears to add $595 to the price, the MSRP in the Summary box drops, making the total amount just $595 more than the Mustang cost Six-speed GT. We are still waiting for the EPA fuel economy estimates for the 2024 Mustang, agency documents proving that the $1,000 GGT applies to vehicles with an unadjusted combined rating of between 21.5 mpg and 22.5 mpg. Vehicles with an unadjusted combined rating of 20.5 mpg to 21.5 mpg are taxed $1,300 more.
Based on estimated fuel costs for the 2023 Mustang, the smaller gap means buyers of ten-speed cars could make their money back on the option in less than five years. This is not the case with the Dark Horse as it costs more regardless of the gearbox.
Speaking of options, they’re also more expensive on the Dark Horse trim. The Appearance package goes up from $250 to $1,500, the Handling package adds $495 to a cost of $4,995, and the carbon fiber Wheels cost $500 more, now $8,995.
