As the world grapples with ongoing health and humanitarian emergencies, the 76th World Health Assembly will focus on advancing health for all.
This year’s session of the World Health Assembly will determine the immediate and long-term future of WHO, beginning with the program budget for the next two years, key decisions on sustainable financing of the Organization, and changes implemented to improve WHO processes and accountability. Delegates will also deliberate on the critical role of WHO in the Global Health Emergency Architecture.
The backdrop to these problems is the organization’s 75he anniversary, featuring highlights of their collective global health achievements since the creation of the WHO in 1948. It will review the progress, achievements and challenges of the past year along with future priorities in the key pillars of WHO’s work: universal health coverage, emergencies, promotion of health and well-being. be. WHA76 will meet from May 21 to 30 at the Palais des Nations in Geneva.

To launch WHA76 on Sunday May 21, the fourth edition of Walk the Talk: Health for All The challenge will kick off at Place des Nations at 8:30am CEST (warm-up starts at 7:30am CEST), to promote physical and mental health and celebrate the importance of partnership during the 75th anniversary of the WHO. During this session, the Director General will present lifetime achievement awards to two world leaders in health.
On Monday, May 22, the Director General will give his keynote address at approximately 10:00 am.
On Friday, May 26, the Director-General of WHO will join representatives of five global foundations to present five awards and health prizes to the seven laureates by 2023. They come from Bahrain, China, Guatemala, Lebanon, Nepal, Thailand and the Philippines.

Key discussions and decisions are expected on:
- A review of WHO’s work in health emergencies, including the International Health Regulations and strengthening WHO’s preparedness and response to health emergencies;
- Strategies and global action in areas such as women’s, children’s, and adolescents’ health, rehabilitation, universal health coverage and primary health care, traditional medicine, infection prevention and control, substandard and falsified medicines, refugee health, and migrants, noncommunicable diseases, mental health, social determinants, nutrition and disabilities;
- approval of the WHO program budget 2024-2025including the decision to increase assessed contributions and other matters emanating from the Working Group on Sustainable Financing.
Daily Strategy Roundtables will take place during lunch hours from Monday to Saturday in Room XVIII. These events will host discussions between assembly delegates, partner agencies, civil society representatives and WHO experts on public health priorities. The sessions take place from May 22 to 27, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:15 p.m. CEST and can be followed online.
As the highest decision-making body of WHO, the Health Assembly sets the Organization’s policy and approves its budget. WHA is attended by delegations from all 194 WHO Member States. The agenda of the Health Assembly is preceded by the 30hemeeting of the Program, Budget and Administration Committee of the Executive Council, which will meet from 17 to 19 May 2023. Following the Assembly, the 153rd session of the Executive Council will take place from 31 May to 1 June.
The Health Assembly is open to registered and accredited Member States, Associate Members, Observers, invited representatives of the UN and other participating intergovernmental organizations and non-state actors.
