The first thing anyone familiar with electric bikes will comment upon seeing the Globe Haul ST in its guise. Specialized has some of the most beautiful paint colors around, but the Globe Haul ST is a sleek matte black. It looks like a step by step vanmoofbikes from the pioneering electric bike manufacturer that recently declared bankrupt after the boom during the Covid-19 pandemic.
I have found the idea of a smart electric bike to be overrated. During a brief test run of a VanMoof, I had to keep fiddling with the app to keep it from beeping and laughing at me when I or someone in my family walked past it in our garage. However, the early success of the VanMoof pointed to the fact that a lot of people were really drawn to a bike that didn’t look overtly technical. If, in the absence of VanMoof, you still crave a minimalist, European-inspired daily driver, I recommend the Globe Haul ST without reservation.
This is Specialized’s first electric cargo bike, and it’s pretty impressive. I have been using it for a month to bike with my family and our entire team around Portland, Oregon. Because it’s a family bike, everyone’s got a say: It’s the bike my husband, 6-year-old son, and 8-year-old daughter choose to ride. It’s like VanMoof and our own Tern GSD (8/10, WIRED recommends) had a baby. If that wasn’t enough, it’s also more affordable.

The range is huge. The stated range is 60 miles. The odometer currently says I’ve put 40 miles on it just walking my kids and I around our neighborhood, and the battery is more than half full. It’s been a month now and I’m going to have to take it on a 15-20 mile ride to get it below the 30 percent level that Specialized asked me to have the battery on when I return it.
One of the worst parts about Specialized electric bikes is that they are designed for people who like to ride bikes. They are not just small electric motorcycles. Just like the Turbo Tero X (8/10, WIRED recommends) tries to teach you how to be a better cyclist, Globe Haul ST wants you to put in as little effort as possible. I’m lazy, it’s hot, and I’m carrying kids and stuff in the sun on 95 degree days, even though I have five levels of assistance and nine gears to choose from, right now I want to pedal as little as possible. as possible. Even in the lowest gear connected to the highest level of assist, I only get about 10mph unless I use the throttle.
The interface is very easy and intuitive to use. It’s a basic LED display with a throttle on the left and an oddly fun gray button to press on the right to turn on the very big and bright headlights and taillights. The front light has multiple modes that go up to 1500 lumens, and I’d suggest not accidentally shining a light on our friends if you want to keep them. It has compact and maneuverable 20-inch all-terrain tires that felt good when I decided to go through gravel roads. Tektro hydraulic disc brakes are fine.
Accessories
Cool accessories make the driving experience that much more useful and fun. I always thought Tern had the best proprietary accessories, but Globe has an amazing assortment with several stylish partners. For example, the patented open panniers have adapters for the front and rear, and the adapter works with the Specialized Package/Fjallraven Cave ($130).
I tested it with the complete rear passenger kit with rear handlebars, footpegs, and wheel guards, along with a front rack and both front side panniers. I don’t particularly like the front panniers (you have to be careful to turn quickly or you’ll scrape them on the ground), but they made the bike a hell of a lot more useful.
