Series, an iOS photo app that helps you creatively style your photos for posting on social media, is now emerging as the must-have companion app for users who post their photos to Instagram threads. On Threads, users soon realized that they could view images in full screen, and with the right format, they could also share perfect panoramas of their photos in full screen.

That has already led some users to experiment with the new format, as artist Pete Halvorsen did, by experimenting with different aspect ratios and then split photos so that users could click on them in full screen mode and swipe.

This, in turn, led Series developer Ryan Carver to add new tools, specifically a tool called TH+, to meet the needs of Threads users and make this process easier.

Carver has a background in photography and design, having previously led product development at photo-sharing app VSCO and co-founded Typekit, which he sold to Adobe, now Adobe Fonts. But for the last four years, he has been working as an independent iOS developer, mainly focused on Series.

The original inspiration for the app actually came from his own photography, curating and designing a gallery exhibit in 2019, Carver told TechCrunch.

“From that experience, I wanted two things: one, better tools to explore the visual relationships between images, and two, to make it easier to share multiple images together,” he said. “The Instagram carousel became the canvas for this, it’s a great format for sharing multiple images in unique layouts,” she noted.

He initially created Series as a tool that he could design for the Instagram carousel and other social networks, including TikTok. The app offers a variety of tools for blending photos and videos, as well as other features such as easy-to-use margin and border controls, the ability to layer photos or videos to create backgrounds, flexible storytelling layouts using diptychs and tri-folds, plus the option to post carousels and more.

Carver says the best way to use Series is to add multiple photos and then explore the different layouts it offers to tell your visual story, like photo blends, stacks, grids, and carousels.

But after seeing how Threads supported full-screen panoramas, Carver added a new TH+ frame ratio to the series within days of Threads’ release to the public, he says. Since then, the feature has been discovered and used by Meta employees, including CTO Andrew Boztank (@boztank), who published an impressive Everest Pano which attracted more than 7,000 likes and 180 responses.

Many Threads users have since started testing the panoramic option taking an image and then spreading it across multiple panels for users to swipe through. Some also put the full image at the bottom of their carousel.

However, to gain access to TH+ Frame Ratio, series users will need to upgrade to the Pro subscription.

This $15 per year package comes with a number of other advanced tools, such as the ability to import and style more than two photos or videos at a time; the ability to split content into more than three panels for Instagram Carousel or Threads; high resolution export; the ability to export videos up to 60 seconds long; the ability to preview Instagram posts or stories before exporting; custom templates so you can save and apply your favorite looks; power tools for complex designs; and custom app icons.

Since the release of version 1.0 in December 2019, Series has attracted around 5,000 monthly active users and about half are paying subscribers. The app was updated to ver. 2.0 in December 2022 with support for video and more layout options, then more recently added TH+ Frame Ratio with a July release aimed at Threads users.

Since then, the app has caught the attention of Head of Instagram Adam Mosseriwho responded to a request from Series on Threads asking if there was a developer relations person for Threads that the app creator could talk to.

“Working on tighter integration like faster workflow, better preview, more layout options,” the Series post teased.
