Toyota TRD Pro watches are far from subtle

Toyota Pro TRD trucks carry some serious prestige: it will only get more serious after Friday 2024 Toyota Tacoma Lineup Revealed presenting the TRD Pro Heavy Duty Trimpart of the one-two off-road hit along with the new top of the line Trailhunter. Anything TRD Pro brand is highly sought after here in California. a bright orange 4corridor TRD Pro received more approval than almost any press car I’ve ever driven, and that includes the high-end likes. Benz, Porsches and a Nissan GT-R. So it was probably only natural that there would eventually be a line of TRD Pro branded watches.

Toyota partnered with Original Grain, a San Diego-based watch company that carved a niche for itself by using sustainably harvested wood to make its watches. Called the Solar Octane collection, subtlety is not her forte. The watches are named after the orange. color exclusive to TRD Pro Tacoma, Tundra, 4Runner and Sequoia for 2023.

Somewhat confusingly, there are three watches named after three different models for Toyota’s off-road platforms. The top-of-the-line TRD Pro is a 44mm self-winding movement built from “race-grade” aluminum and black wood. It sports a camouflage pattern, if you can call it bright orange digital camo, and comes in its own sturdy orange case. It costs $749 and is limited to 250 pieces, each series numbered.

The mid-grade is called TRD Off-Road, named for the grade that isn’t quite as tough as the TRD Pro but still has plenty of off-road capability. It is a 45mm case with a solar movement made of stainless steel and blackwood. It also features a digital camo print, but at least the main color is black. It is priced at $549 and is also limited to 250 individually numbered pieces.

Finally, there’s the TRD Sport, named for its street-ready trucks. It has a 45mm case, uses a solar movement and is made of stainless steel. It costs $595 and is not a limited production item.

Watches are far from the understated elegance of a Porsche Tag Heuer either Nissan GT-R Grand Seiko, each of which can cost upwards of $23,000. However, there are probably enough TRD Pro fans out there who will go for this type of wrist accessory. They’re on the flashy side, but so is a flashy orange pickup.
