- One in every thirteen temporary workers reported use of work platforms in 2023. In aggregate, 7.6% of temporary workers reported being employed via either a consumer-related or business-related work platform to at least some degree in 2023. The general trend has been around this level of usage since 2018.
- Consumer-related work platforms. The vast majority of temporary workers are either not yet familiar with (36%) or are familiar but not interested in (51%) work platforms primarily serving consumers (e.g., Door Dash, Uber, etc.). However, 7% are earning at least some income from them, and 6% are considering using them within two years. The current 7% usage is roughly in line with usage levels reported since 2016.
- Business-related work platforms. Likewise, the vast majority of temporary workers are either not yet familiar with (70%) or are familiar but not interested in (23%) work platforms primarily serving businesses (e.g., Upwork, Freelancer, etc.). Two percent are earning at least some income from them, and another 5% are considering using them. The 2% current usage is roughly consistent with levels of usage reported since 2018.
