Truecaller has launched a web version of its caller ID app of the same name that offers a variety of features including SMS and chat mirroring, call notifications, and number lookup functionality on desktop. Initially, the web version, called Truecaller for Web, will only be available for Android users in India, the company said, but it plans to roll out support to other territories in the future.
All Truecaller for Android users in India can now link their devices to the web client on a PC or Mac via a QR code. At the moment, Truecaller limits the number of active web sessions to one and also automatically logs users out after 30 days of non-use. Users can also manually unlink a browser from settings. This is similar to linking the web version of a messenger like WhatsApp either Telegram.
Truecaller, which counts India as its largest market with nearly 259 million users, is taking a long time to offer the SMS and chat mirroring feature. Notably, Microsoft offers SMS mirroring for Android and iPhone users on Windows through its Phone Link functionality. However, this functionality could provide your users with some convenience by quickly replying to a text message or accessing one-time passwords (OTP) to log in.
Truecaller also offers users the ability to search for a phone number on its website, albeit with some rate limits. Users will now be able to search for numbers without such limitations in the web client, the company said. The web client also displays real-time caller ID notifications when a user receives a call.
The company said there are 80 million people who receive SMS push summary notifications every day. This just means that these users have not denied Truecaller permission to read SMS. But it is not clear if these people use Truecaller as their main SMS client.
Over the past few months, Truecaller has been focusing on introducing more AI-powered features. Last month he launched an update to the “Max” function for Android users to block all calls from unapproved contacts or spam detected by AI. In February, the company also brought AI-powered call recording and transcription features to India after starting the function in the United States last year.
After posting lower revenues in the quarter, the company had a 32% stock drop in October 2023. However, the stock has recovered from the low price of 24.47 SEK ($2.32) to trading around 31.68 SEK ($3) at the time of writing.
