Truro and Colchester Chamber hosts small business awards | Community

The Truro and Colchester Chamber of Commerce is hosting this year’s Small Business Week, celebrating outstanding businesses in the area.

The Chamber received more than 100 nominations from businesses across the county. The event aims to showcase the vibrant and diverse cross-section of the local business community.

The Chamber presented 14 awards at the October 24 luncheon held at the Best Western Glengarry.

“Small Business Week is a very special time for the Chamber as we present these awards to community leaders,” said Interim Executive Director Chelsea Weatherbee. “It is a true celebration of the business community as we recognize the impact small businesses have in creating a thriving local economy.”

This year’s small business award winners include Inclusive Financial for excellence in diversity and inclusion, Chaplin’s Confections for the New Small Business Award and Truro Chiropractic Clinic for the Small Business Achievement Award.

Hestaband Therapeutic has been awarded the Export Achievement Award, while Debert Hospitality Center has won the Small Business Innovation Award. Derado’s Pizzeria received an Excellence in Community Development Award, while Eisses Grain and AG Services received the Small Agricultural Business Award.

Oceanside Aviation won the Small Business Growth Award and Many Moods Counseling received the Newcomer Business Award. The Maritza Nolasco Legend Games and Conference Center received the Work Excellence Award.

Clair’s Classic Antiques received the Tourism Business of the Year Award and Hub Tune Up received the Small Business of the Year Award for their work. Good Clean Farm received the Environmental Stewardship Award for its commitment to the earth.

This year, the Chamber will also present its fifth Rising Star/Legacy Award to Ashton’s Garden Centre. The award is given to a new company, less than five years old. The award includes mentoring services from local business professionals, as well as $2,500 in funding to assist with operations, improving products or service delivery.

Michael Ashton is the owner of Ashton’s Garden Centre. He said the nomination came as a surprise. It was good timing for him and his staff as they are a seasonal business and are looking to expand their spring/summer work to more events throughout the year.

“The award is a huge help to me and my staff,” Ashton said. “I couldn’t do any of this without them.”

Money and mentors.

The money and mentoring will help extend the shoulder season when Ashton’s Garden Center begins its first Christmas market starting in late November. The company hopes to make the market and Christmas Walk an annual tradition in the area.

“I’m very grateful for the recognition,” Ashton said. “The awards help all the businesses in the area, it’s all a big circle.”
