‘Twisted Metal’ trailer shows Anthony Mackie driving a Subaru WRX with machine guns

Another day, another post-apocalyptic TV series. This time it is “Twisted Metal,” based on the PlayStation series about vehicular combat. It’s definitely one of the darker titles to get an adaptation, but count on us for the machines and the carnage. And comedy, at least this post-apocalypse is funny.

The original “Twisted Metal” the game was released in 1996. Players selected from a number of different vehicles with different pros and cons to fight in a gladiator-like arena. The cars were unlicensed, but some bore similarities to real-world vehicles. There were analogues to the AM General Hummersearly 60s Chevrolet Impala lowriders, Lamborghini Devil, Checker Marathon taxi and so on. Sequels expanded the variety of cars. There were eight games in total in the series, as well as a couple of spin-offs, with the last one released in 2012.

As far as we know, there has never been one Subaru WRX in any of the games. But that’s exactly what lead actor Anthony Mackie is driving in the trailer. The show appears to take place in the Mad Max USA where civilization has collapsed, hence an AWD sports sedan it actually makes a good choice. It’s tough enough to take off the pavement, yet fast and nimble enough to outwit the toughest war platforms. Additionally, this particular specimen is equipped with machine guns and a Sony CD player (of course).

In the game, the contestants entered a death match held by a mysterious supernatural puppeteer who granted the winner one wish of any value. According to IMDb, the plot of the series revolves around Mackie’s character John Doe delivering a package of unknown content across the wasteland for a reward.

If there’s anything casual gamers might remember about the “Twisted Metal” game, was the psychotic clown character driving an ice cream truck. The evil Sweet Tooth has become something of a mascot for the series. We see him at the end of the trailer, played by wrestler Joe Seanoa, although he will be voiced by Will Arnett.

Sony’s Playstation Productions is on a roll featuring game adaptations, from the dramatic zombie survival series”The Last of Us“on HBO at”Ghost Tsushima’s “samurai epic in development. They also have the next racing movie”Gran Turismofor those who prefer an automotive story with fewer killer clowns. “Twisted Metal” begins streaming on the Peacock Network July 27.
