Unbelievable: Acronym’s mind-blowing new computer collaboration with Asus will leave you speechless!

As criticize functional art? Do you base your assessment on his ability or on the resolution with which he solves a problem? Is it more important that it succeed as an art? Or is it the overall statement of purpose that matters, be damned the balance between form and function?

Not questions I expected to deal with while reviewing a hybrid tablet, well, to be honest. But here we are.

The design studio and clothing manufacturer. Acronym has collaborated with Asus to produce another device in a co-branded line of computers. This, the ROG FLOW Z13-ACRNM RMT02 rich in mouthfeel, is the second of its series ‘reality modeling tool’. Asus has a history of flashy stunt machines, but the Acronym series (the last one was a simple laptop) is the most interesting to me, a student and collector of Acronym products.

Acronym creates functional garments in layers, from the skin to the outer. The catalog is made largely of German fabrics and materials such as schoeller-dryskin, GORE-TEX and encapsulated nylon. acronym founders hugo errolson and Michaela Sachenbacher have built a truly unique brand over the decades since 1994, collaborating first with brands like Burton and then Nike’s sub-brand ACG to create what the general public now considers the modern technical sports aesthetic. The cut and shape of the clothing is more like hiking or martial arts clothing and technical aspects are emphasized above anything else. Still, they are stylish and unique: instantly recognizable.

One of my older pieces is a first generation. J1A, one of the most iconic jackets in the history of fashion design. Twenty years after it was made, it’s still incredibly functional and feels 100 percent modern.

That branding thought is clearly written on the RMT02’s face, back, and keys. It is a brutal and functional equipment that combines the modernity of the black monolith of the 16:10 screen with a back and a machined metal frame. Iconography and typography courtesy of designer David Rudnick wrap the case in many different applications: printed, milled and embossed.

There’s a certain character that I absorbed by being practically around when personal computers came into the world. Something about taking part in that revolution, quickly followed by the internet, and at the same time drinking in books, movies, and culture influenced by it. The feel of computers like tools you used to manipulate the bits and bauds of the internet, rather than smoothly encapsulated portals that seemed to disappear.

The computers of my youth were jumbled bits of plastic, metal, wire, dust, and blinking cursors on black and green screens. They asked a lot of you: building your own PC was a DPS test for patience and hunger. Hungry for access to the world that could only be reached through that demanding door.

Although this ASUS tablet thing is light years away from that universe, I think it’s clear that Acronym feels something of that as well and wanted to evoke it here. This makes sense: Acronym’s clothing is designed to be an interface between the wearer and the world. Usually, wearing technical clothing and wearing normal clothing are actually two separate experiences. Acronym has managed to blend the aesthetic and functional worlds so aggressively that he’s managed to push a hernia bubble of his own into the universe where to dress for the apocalypse. also it keeps you dry, makes your stuff easier to store and reach, and blends in with every layer of clothing you wear. Is not easy. This machine lives in that same bubble.

I’m honestly not going to spend much time on performance here – battery life isn’t great, but it’s a very capable machine that produces decent frame rates for gaming and will handle “internet stuff” just fine. It’s got a GeForce RTX 4070 laptop GPU and a 13th-gen Intel Core i9, and the screen is really nice with a solid 165Hz refresh rate. It’s got all the other normal stuff a computer should have too.

I’m still not very convinced that you’re going to buy this if you’re not a collector. either looking for a vibe trade with a computing device, so I’m not sure getting too much detail about performance is worth it in the long run. I think the important thing is to know that Yeah Going for one of these $2,500 hybrids, you’re not going to get a crippled computer with it, it’s the top tier for form factor.

The RMT02’s exoskeleton features four clip attachment points where a somewhat complex sling can be deployed. The sling allows you to carry it over the shoulder without a bag, and yes, integrates with Acronym’s Interops jacket system that allows you to slide it under the tail of your Gore-Tex to protect it from the rain. It also hooks into 4 points to allow you to compute while standing up. Everything works, very well actually. I don’t know how many times you’d use something like this, or carry it out of a bag, but it’s absolutely functional.

Wild, out there, a little crazy, but finally functional. That is the Acronym brand.

The milled aluminum case is beautiful, the kickstand is solid as hell, and the keyboard…is inscrutable. You better know how to touch type. The Cyrillic alphabet designed for Acronym by Rudnick is part of the theme: this is a computer from another dimension slightly off axis from his own, where people stand in the rain on the roof of a parking lot typing something into a terminal prompt.

Of note, the pack comes with a strap pocket made of X-Pac laminate (an anti-cut/tear material derived from racing canvas) which would likely slow you down. several hundred dollars from the Acrony website. Fun!

The RMT02 is a tone poem of a computer that sounds like a modem firing a handshake signal and feels like the turbo button on a tower PC. It wraps, clicks, straps, hangs and folds. He does things. Most computers run great these days, all things considered. But most of them are pretty damn inert. They open up and sit there. The RMT02 feels like it constantly wants to be other things, maybe things you need. I love that. It’s unique. It is not for everyone.
