But first the good: Vision Pro is a sophisticated device that’s relatively easy to set up and incredibly intuitive to use. Setup requires the use of an iPhone to automatically make some assessments of your eyes and ears. If you wear prescription glasses (I wear contacts), additional calibration is required, but Apple promises it won’t be complicated.
Once that’s all done, you’ll quickly find that putting on the Vision Pro is easy too, thanks to a button on the side that ensures the headset sits comfortably. And unlike other headsets, the Vision Pro isn’t a bulky-looking piece of nerdware, although the goggles aren’t exactly fancy, although they look a bit like something you might wear on a ski slope, jet fighter or race car.
Controlling the Vision Pro is amazingly simple. Users simply press a button above the right goggle to bring up a virtual screen of apps, including familiar standby functions for photos, messaging, phone calls, video streaming, and web browsing. To open an app, all you have to do is look directly at it and then pinch your thumb and fingers together. The same app can be closed with a finger press or moved sideways by holding two fingers together and moving them in the direction you want to place them.
Unsurprisingly, Apple’s well-curated demo puts the Vision Pro in the best possible light. The headset clearly seems to be very popular for business purposes, improving productivity, collaboration and video conferencing, especially at a time when more work is being done remotely.
Without causing the confusing effects common to other virtual reality headsets, the Vision Pro can immerse you in stunning visuals and 3D renderings of distant locations. It can embed you in videos of past memories captured by one of the device’s 12 cameras (the demo included heartwarming scenes of a kid’s birthday party and a campfire scene). As a result, watching a 3D movie, such as the latest Avatar movie, can feel like sitting in an IMAX theater while relaxing on your own couch. It can transport you to surreal moments (once I watched in wonder as a butterfly, first shown on a virtual screen depicting a prehistoric era, seemingly fluttered across the room and landed in my outstretched hand as I sat on a couch sat).
And the demo provided just enough insight into the way sporting events appear through the glasses to realize that those in charge of professional and college football, basketball, baseball and hockey will inevitably find ways to incorporate the technology into subscription services that give the spectators the feeling of being in the front row.

THE POTENTIAL DISADVANTAGES
Ironically, my mixed feelings about Apple’s initial foray into mixed reality stem from how well the Vision Pro was engineered by a company that’s lagging behind This type of breakthrough technology has been deployed multiple times over the last 40 yearsfrom the Macintosh computer to the iPhone.
It seems this is yet another case in which Apple has achieved something other tech companies have missed, cracking the code to make both virtual and augmented reality more immersive and less confusing than a multitude other boring headsets have previously managed in the last decade or so.
The only reason the Vision Pro won’t be an instant sensation is its cost. When it hits the US market early next year, it’ll retail for $3,500, making it likely it’ll be a luxury item to begin with that’s unaffordable for most households — mostly because the headset isn’t the Need to buy a new iPhone or Android smartphone every few years.
The most likely scenario is that Vision Pro is, in a sense, Apple’s test bed for mixed reality, which will encourage the development of more apps specifically designed to take advantage of the technology.
