A handful of very small parcels of city-owned land are under the auctioneer’s hammer.

They include a 0.004 hectare (0.01 acre) verge in St Austell and a 0.003 hectare (0.007 acre) slope behind a bus stop in St Blazey.

Clive Emson Auctioneers said there had been interest in the plots, which will be available for bidding only online.

The green area between the path and the access road is one of the available plots.

They are among more than 300 lots from across England to be auctioned.

‘Garage’

Steve, who lives next door to The Verge in St Austell, said: “I think my landlady has been trying to get it for a long time but the council keeps turning her down.

“Now she’s had to go through all this rigmarole…I think she’s ready for a garage.”

Another neighbor added: “It’s very strange, very strange, what can you do with it, it’s a small piece of land?

“I thought it was the property but it’s not, it’s the overgrowth next to the property.”

Regional director David Henwood said the plots in Cornwall were “surplus to the needs” of local authorities.

“They’ve had them for different periods of time and for different reasons, but they don’t use them anymore,” he said.

“Most have been advertised openly, which has sparked interest as, in theory, they could be had for as little as £1.

“We’ve had interest from a variety of people, some very local and some from further afield.”

Alternative use

There are four lots at auction in Cornwall that have no guide price, so are available for £1.

Some of these may be considered suitable for alternative use, subject to obtaining the necessary planning permission.

Mr Henwood said: “The natural buyers for some of the plots are people who have land immediately next door, but some of the plots have some potential if the correct planning requirements are met.”

The auction was scheduled to begin at 10:00 BST.
