Collaboration Between WHO and Global Citizen to Promote Global Health
Introduction
In a joint effort to protect and improve the health of people worldwide, the World Health Organization (WHO) and international advocacy organization Global Citizen have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to collaborate on global advocacy initiatives over the next three years. This partnership aims to address health inequalities, promote physical and mental health, and tackle health challenges resulting from climate change.
Background
WHO, the United Nations specialized agency for health, has recognized the value of its previous collaborations with Global Citizen in raising awareness and driving action to improve global health. The two organizations have previously joined forces in activities such as the international broadcast special called “One World: Together at Home,” held at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. This event garnered significant support and commitment from corporate and philanthropic partners, raising $128 million for the COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund for WHO.
Collaboration Objectives
The main objectives of the collaboration between WHO and Global Citizen are:
- Supporting global efforts to overcome inequalities in accessing healthcare services
- Promoting the highest levels of physical and mental health for all individuals
- Addressing health-related challenges posed by climate change
This partnership aims to advance the mission of health for all, with a particular focus on engaging the world’s youth.
Partnership Signing
The MoU between WHO and Global Citizen was signed at the ‘Power Our Planet: Live’ event in Paris. This event took place during the Summit for a New Global Financing Pact, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and global advocacy in achieving the goals and priorities outlined in WHO’s Thirteenth General Program of Work (GPW13) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Expanding Advocacy Initiatives
As part of the MoU, WHO and Global Citizen will undertake global advocacy initiatives to raise awareness and promote evidence-based health advice. Some key areas of focus include:
- Improving public health through evidence-based health advice
- Advancing health equity and reducing inequalities
- Addressing the impacts of climate change on health
- Increasing immunization rates
- Promoting women’s and girls’ health
- Supporting and recognizing the importance of local health providers
These initiatives aim to bring about positive change in healthcare delivery and services worldwide.
The Impact of Climate Change on Health
Climate change presents a significant challenge to global health. Rising temperatures, extreme weather events, and environmental degradation all have direct and indirect impacts on human health. Some of the consequences of climate change on health include:
- Increased frequency and intensity of heatwaves, leading to heat-related illnesses and deaths
- Changes in the geographic distribution of infectious diseases, such as malaria and dengue fever
- Food and water insecurity, resulting in malnutrition and waterborne diseases
- Displacement and refugee crises, leading to mental health issues and inadequate access to healthcare
Addressing the profound interconnectedness between climate change and health requires urgent and concerted action. The collaboration between WHO and Global Citizen aims to mobilize resources and advocate for policies and practices that mitigate the health impacts of climate change.
The Role of Global Citizen
Global Citizen, an international advocacy organization, has a mission to end extreme poverty. Through a global community of activists, Global Citizen amplifies campaigns and events that bring together leaders from various sectors to address pressing global issues. The collaboration with WHO allows Global Citizen to leverage its platform and community to advocate for health equity, access to healthcare, and the mitigation of climate change impacts on health.
Conclusion
The partnership between WHO and Global Citizen represents a significant step towards promoting and protecting global health. By joining forces, these organizations can amplify their advocacy efforts, mobilize resources, and engage citizens worldwide to address health inequalities and climate change impacts on health. Through their collaboration, WHO and Global Citizen aim to improve the health and well-being of all people, particularly the most vulnerable populations.
