All of that would be impressive under any circumstances, but now consider this: “I was born covered in eczema from head to toe and I’ve dealt with it for the last 45 years,” she says. “I actually spent a whole month at Mayo Clinic when I was a kid because my skin got infected.” Today, she says, “I can talk about being a black woman whose eczema is virtually gone, [with the exception of] a spot on my foot.”

Smith always checks fiber content labels while shopping for clothing. “I wear cotton 99% of the time,” she says. “I am also very careful that there is not a lot of latex in any clothing I buy, as it tends to irritate my skin. If I wear synthetic clothing, I wear cotton underwear (think biker shorts and tank tops) to ensure there is little contact. “I only wash my clothes with unscented detergent and I always add baking soda to my clothes as well,” Smith says. “This is to ensure that allergens and irritants from daily outdoor activities are removed from my clothing.”
Although she uses an oil to lightly cleanse her face daily (in her case, it’s non-irritating), Smith knows this may not be for everyone. “I use Cetaphil products when I feel like I need a deeper cleanse without damaging my skin,” he says.
Smith chooses several natural products, which she likes to combine, and also some commercial brands. “I use a mixture of shea butter and castor oil after I shower,” he says. “I like to use Aquaphor during difficult times. I also use Cerave and keep that brand’s hand cream in my bag.”
This one’s a tricky one: Smith has yet to find makeup that feels completely right on her skin. Still, he uses some, as he found his favorite brand through trial and error. “Neutrogena products don’t seem to cause me to break out, as long as I cleanse as soon as I get home,” she says.
“They resist pilling and don’t dry out my skin,” says Smith. “They also tend to keep me cooler, which helps prevent me from getting itchy from overheating.”
In addition to purchasing the right products, Smith relies on calming techniques to help her with her eczema. “Meditation specifically for stress has really helped me control my attacks,” she says. “I find that when I’m itchy, I’m emotionally stressed or irritated. Calming my mind helps calm my skin. “It didn’t happen overnight, but meditation has helped me immensely.”
Another of your top priorities is getting a good night’s sleep. With that in mind, Smith decided to leave traditional coffee. “In the beginning it was In fact hard,” he says. “I tried it cold turkey and the headaches made me run back to the cafe. I tried the tea and it wasn’t enough. “I tried coffee substitutes, but they had ingredients that seemed to make me angry.” That’s what prompted her to create her own coffee substitute. “After a week of gradually incorporating the substitute, I finally found relief and slept well,” she says.
