# Blog Post on Next Generation Natural Gas
#### Introduction
The future of energy lies in sustainable and affordable alternatives that can reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In Chattanooga, Tennessee, one company is taking a significant step towards achieving this goal. Chattanooga Gas, a natural gas supplier, has announced a new initiative to reduce methane emissions by partnering with environmentally conscious producers. This move aims to provide their residential and small business customers with next-generation natural gas, also known as Certified Low Emissions Natural Gas. In this blog post, we will explore the impact of this initiative and its implications for a greener energy future.
#### The Importance of Environmentally Conscious Producers
As we strive towards a sustainable energy future, it is crucial to support companies that prioritize reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Chattanooga Gas recognizes this importance and has made a commitment to partnering with environmentally conscious producers. By purchasing, transporting, or delivering natural gas from these producers, Chattanooga Gas ensures that their customers receive a supply that aligns with their sustainability goals. This initiative plays a critical role in achieving a more environmentally friendly energy future.
#### The Impact of Next-Generation Natural Gas
Chattanooga Gas’s partnership with Williams’ Sequent Energy Management has resulted in the supply of “next generation natural gas” to their residential and small business customers. This Certified Low Emissions Natural Gas allows Chattanooga Gas to support a significant reduction in methane emissions. The estimated annual emission reduction from this initiative is approximately 646 tons of methane or 16,152 tons of carbon dioxide. To put this into perspective, it is equivalent to removing emissions from more than 3,500 automobiles off the road for a year. The acquisition of next-generation natural gas not only supports the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions but also contributes to economy-wide decarbonization efforts.
#### Chattanooga Gas’s Sustainability Efforts
Chattanooga Gas’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions goes beyond their partnership with environmentally conscious producers. The company has set a goal to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions from its operations by 2050. This ambitious target aligns with their overall sustainability efforts and highlights their dedication to being an environmentally responsible natural gas supplier. By continuously seeking innovative solutions and collaborating with industry leaders, Chattanooga Gas aims to lead the way in reducing GHG emissions throughout the value chain.
#### Building a Sustainable Energy Future through Legislation
The acquisition of next-generation natural gas by Chattanooga Gas is not only driven by their commitment but also supported by legislation. The Tennessee Natural Gas Innovation Act, Senate Bill of 1959, was passed into law in 2022, allowing natural gas utilities to procure innovative natural gas resources. This includes resources such as agricultural gas, biogas, renewable natural gas, hydrogen, carbon capture, qualifying offsets, and energy efficiency resources. The legislation further empowers the Tennessee Public Utilities Commission to authorize mechanisms to recover incremental costs associated with these resources. By leveraging this legislation, Chattanooga Gas solidifies its position as a leader in building a sustainable energy future.
#### The Partnership with Williams and its Impact
Williams’ Sequent Energy Management has played a crucial role in enabling Chattanooga Gas to provide next-generation natural gas to its customers. The partnership between these two companies demonstrates a commitment to clean energy solutions and low-carbon natural gas. The NextGen Gas program, powered by Williams’ industry-leading Sequent marketing platform, ensures the reliable supply of low-carbon natural gas. By connecting the best production basins in the US with credible low-carbon solutions, these companies help their customers achieve their sustainability goals. The partnership between Chattanooga Gas and Williams showcases the power of collaboration in driving significant environmental change.
#### Similar Efforts in the Industry
Chattanooga Gas is not alone in its pursuit of a sustainable energy future. Utilities owned by Southern Company Gas, including Virginia Natural Gas and Nicor Gas, have also made strides towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Virginia Natural Gas began procuring next-generation natural gas for their customers in 2019. Today, up to half of their customers’ energy demand is supplied by this low-emission product. Similarly, Nicor Gas, a Southern Company Gas subsidiary in Illinois, has sourced fuel from environmentally conscious suppliers. This system-wide initiative at Southern Company Gas demonstrates the commitment to sustainability shared by its utilities across multiple states.
#### Achieving Net-Zero Greenhouse Gas Emissions
The sustainability efforts of Southern Company Gas extend beyond its individual utilities. The company aims to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions from its operations by 2050. This long-term objective aligns with broader environmental goals and showcases Southern Company Gas’s dedication to leading the industry in sustainable practices. By investing in interstate gas pipelines, owning and operating natural gas storage facilities, and prioritizing the development of low-carbon solutions, Southern Company Gas strives to be at the forefront of the energy transition.
#### Conclusion
Chattanooga Gas’s initiative to provide next-generation natural gas to its customers is a significant step towards a sustainable and affordable energy future. By partnering with environmentally conscious producers and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the company is setting an example for other utilities and businesses in the industry. This commitment, combined with their goal of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, showcases Chattanooga Gas’s dedication to environmental responsibility. Through legislation, collaborations with industry leaders like Williams, and efforts across the Southern Company Gas network, the path to a greener energy future is becoming a reality.
#### Summary
In conclusion, Chattanooga Gas’s announcement of providing next-generation natural gas supplied by environmentally conscious producers highlights their commitment to a sustainable energy future. This partnership, particularly with Williams’ Sequent Energy Management, enables the reduction of methane emissions and contributes to decarbonization efforts. Chattanooga Gas’s sustainability goals, including achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, reinforce their dedication to environmental responsibility. This initiative is supported by legislation and aligns with broader efforts within Southern Company Gas to achieve a low-carbon energy sector.
