How Speakeasy is Revolutionizing API Creation and Distribution
Today I’m looking for
In a recent acquisition, the tech industry witnessed a significant move towards more resilient APIs. This acquisition sheds light on the growing importance of APIs in a digital ecosystem that demands seamless integration and interoperability. This article explores the recent developments and how they impact the future of API creation and distribution.
The Challenge of API Sprawl
Large companies with extensive developer teams face the challenge of managing numerous APIs or microservices. According to the 2023 State of the API Report conducted by Postman, 31% of respondents at these large companies cited API sprawl as a barrier to producing APIs. This issue highlights the need for a more efficient and streamlined approach to API management.
Introducing Speakeasy: Simplifying API Creation
Speakeasy, an early-stage startup, aims to simplify the process of building and distributing APIs. The company’s mission is to address the major pain points faced by developers and provide them with a solution that drastically simplifies the way APIs are shipped to end users. TechCrunch’s Ron Miller interviewed Speakeasy’s CEO, Sagar Batchu, who emphasized the need for a more user-friendly API creation process.
The Rise of Akita Software
The recent acquisition of Postman and the upcoming integration of API observability startup Akita Software are significant developments in the API industry. With the addition of Akita, managing production APIs becomes easier than ever, enabling users to navigate API expansion effortlessly. This integration emphasizes the importance of observability in API management and highlights the value of tools that facilitate debugging, maintenance, and continuous improvement.
A Fundamental Shift in Software Development
According to Jean Yang, the founder of Akita Software, the rise of APIs has fundamentally changed the software development process. With more tests moving into production, the behavior of software is now determined by observed behavior rather than predicted outcomes. Developers need new tools that allow them to inspect production, not just for initial software creation but also for debugging, maintenance, and iterative improvements.
Expanding the Reach of Chaos Engineering
In addition to API management, another emerging trend in the tech industry is the democratization of chaos engineering. Traditionally, chaos engineering was exclusive to site reliability engineers, but its significance has expanded beyond this domain. This article explores the benefits and challenges of implementing chaos engineering practices in various areas of software development.
Expanding Horizons: The Future of API Creation and Distribution
While APIs have become a critical component of modern digital ecosystems, the process of creating and distributing them can still be complex and cumbersome. The recent developments discussed in this article pave the way for a more efficient and streamlined approach to API management.
The Impact of Speakeasy
Speakeasy’s innovative solution to simplify API creation has the potential to revolutionize the industry. By addressing the pain points faced by developers, Speakeasy streamlines the process of shipping APIs to end users. This not only saves time and resources but also enables developers to focus on core functionality and innovation.
The Importance of API Observability
The integration of Akita Software with Postman underscores the significance of API observability in managing production APIs. Observability allows developers to gain insights into the behavior and performance of APIs, facilitating debugging, maintenance, and iterative improvements. With the rise of APIs as a fundamental component of software development, proper observability becomes crucial for ensuring seamless integration and optimal performance.
Democratizing Chaos Engineering
Chaos engineering, once exclusive to site reliability engineers, is now finding its way into other areas of software development. Embracing chaos engineering practices can help organizations identify and mitigate potential system failures and vulnerabilities. By intentionally introducing controlled disruptions, developers can enhance the resilience and reliability of their systems, ultimately leading to improved user experiences and customer satisfaction.
Looking Ahead
The future of API creation and distribution is promising. As more startups like Speakeasy enter the market with innovative solutions, developers can expect a more streamlined and user-friendly experience. The integration of observability tools like Akita Software further enhances the management of production APIs, ensuring their seamless functioning. Additionally, the democratization of chaos engineering opens new avenues for improving system resilience and reliability.
Summary:
API creation and distribution are undergoing significant changes and advancements. Speakeasy, an early-stage startup, aims to simplify the process of building and distributing APIs. Large companies with extensive developer teams are facing challenges related to managing numerous APIs or microservices. The recent acquisition of Postman and the integration of Akita Software highlight the importance of API observability in managing production APIs. The rise of APIs has fundamentally changed the software development process, emphasizing the need for tools that facilitate debugging, maintenance, and continuous improvement. Moreover, chaos engineering, once exclusive to site reliability engineers, is now being democratized and finding its place in various areas of software development.

resistant APIs
Building and distributing APIs could soon be easier: Speakeasy, an early-stage startup, is Working on it.
“We started by working on a major problem for me, one I’ve dealt with a lot as a developer, that is drastically simplifying the way developers can ship APIs to end users,” CEO Sagar Batchu told TechCrunch’s Ron Miller.
However, large companies with more than 5,000 developers are already fighting API sprawl, according to a survey backing Postman’s API platform. 2023 State of the API Report. Thirty-one percent of respondents at these large companies cited “managing too many APIs or microservices” as a barrier to producing APIs, compared to just 23% of all respondents.
It’s not hard to see how this finding connects to the recently announced acquisition of Postman and the upcoming integration of API observability startup Akita Software. “The addition of Akita will make it easier than ever for users to manage their production APIs, even in the face of API expansion,” their press release states.
According to Akita founder Jean Yang, the rise of APIs has fundamentally changed the software development process. “More and more tests have moved into production. The predicted behavior is now based on the observed behavior. Increasingly, the only way for teams to find out what’s working is by inspecting production. We need new tools that meet developers where they are: not just for creating the first draft of software, but for debugging, maintenance, and the umpteenth draft,” he wrote in his announcement.
On a related note, chaos engineering may no longer be the exclusive domain of site reliability engineers.
