The Nest Hub Max is our current favorite smart display also for other reasons. We like that you can use your camera to identify individual members of the house, showing only the information corresponding to each one, and the larger screen makes it ideal for watching YouTube tutorials. Google has also added support for group video calls via Duo, Zoom, and Google Meet, making it an even better option if you regularly connect with friends or coworkers who use those services.

The Echo Show 10 is a great alternative to the Alexa-powered Nest Hub Max. It’s more useful than third-party Alexa devices because you can call and network with Amazon’s other Echo speakers. If you don’t like music, Amazon Echo Dot With Clock (5th generation) and Google’s mini nest (7/10, WIRED recommends) will give you most of the benefits of owning a smart speaker, and you can use them to make existing speakers smarter at low cost. The sound is very similar between the models and they have almost identical footprints, so it can be argued that one is better than the other based solely on the ecosystem. We used to prefer the Nest Mini for this reason, but now that Amazon has added a simple clock to the front of the Echo Dot, we like it a bit better.
The small screen on the Echo Dot With Clock is very useful. It can tell you when your timers in the kitchen will expire or when your alarm is set for the morning. It also tells the time. That makes it a better bedroom and kitchen companion. You can also ask him the weather, have him answer random questions, and play white noise at bedtime to help him sleep.
