This is another big scam that has made people lose thousands of money. Scammers create fake websites to trick people. Recently, three cases of cyber fraud have been reported in Panchkula, Chandigarh with cyber cell in one day. All three victims lost Rs 10 lakh to the scammers when they dialed Google’s main search number believing them to be customer support numbers. In the first case, a government teacher told police she was trying to get her bank statement online. While searching, she found a cell phone number at the top of the search requesting the SBI customer service number. When she dialed the number, the person on the other end of the call claimed to be a bank employee and took her personal bank details. Later, the accused reportedly withdrew Rs 4.47 lakh from the bank account. In the second complaint filed with the police, a government teacher said he made some incorrect transactions on the GooglePay app and looked up the customer support number to file a complaint. Believing that Google’s main search number was customer support, she dialed the number and the person on the other end assured him of help and took his personal bank details and later withdrew Rs 2.50 lakh from the account of him. Another complaint was filed by Vikas Bontiyal, a resident of Sector 27. He told police that he was trying to book a hotel in Haridwar online. When he found a suitable hotel, he dialed the number taken from the online link. The caller claimed to be the manager of the hotel and demanded Rs 10,000 as the advance booking amount. When the victim paid the amount, the hotel manager said he had not received the payment. Later, under the guise of providing help, the fake hotel manager sent a link to the victim and when Bontiyal clicked on that link, Rs 1.49 lakh was withdrawn from his bank account in three different transactions.
