USA: The Senate Democrat leader accuses the House of Representatives of threatening default and points to an ongoing debt stalemate

After a meeting at the White House, US Senate leader Chuck Schumer accused House Speaker Kevin McCarthy of “putting Americans at risk” by not ruling out an American default on the debt.

The Treasury Department estimates that if the debt ceiling is not raised or lifted before June, the world’s largest economy could enter an unprecedented default scenario.

However, Republicans will only accept an increase in the limit if Democrats agree to cut public spending.

In a press conference after the meeting of congressional leaders with US President Joe Biden, Schumer reiterated that the ruling party would not accept making the solution to the debt brake conditional on spending cuts. In his opinion, the ceiling must be raised unconditionally and the issue of spending must be addressed in the budget debate.

McCarthy, in turn, said the meeting did not produce “new movements,” suggesting the impasse persists.
