UX/UI Bootcamp Review: Avocademy | Happiness education

User experience and user interface design (UX/UI design) is something we all take for granted these days. For example, when we visit a website, we expect a seamless experience – otherwise we quickly click away. As a result, not only demand but also student interest in this subject area has increased dramatically. Bootcamps specifically address this interest.

Although it has only been around for about four years, avocado is a boot camp where students quickly found success with ever-evolving programming.

Avocademy curriculum and lecturers

Avocademy’s coursework is asynchronous, meaning students watch recorded lessons and complete projects independently. Depending on your learning style, this can be a great way to immerse yourself and continue learning at your leisure.

An Avocademy teacher accompanies students as they prepare for the program.

“Our learning environment provides structure and accountability without the hassle and stress of mandated class times,” explains Baigorria, who serves as an instructor for many lessons. Before founding Avocademy during the pandemic, she worked as a user experience designer at Pwc.

Avocademy’s mentors are a big part of what it has to offer – not just in terms of professional development, but also through building personal connections. Baigorria said mentors are spread across U.S. time zones and can chat with students seven days a week. Although not all of Avocademy’s mentors are listed, many of them work in the UX field at small and medium-sized companies.

The transparency of the academy

Contacting Avocademy is a fairly simple process via an email address in the footer of the website, which is checked regularly (Assets Responses to inquiries received within 24 hours). Prospective students who have additional questions will be directed to a Calendly page where individuals can schedule a 20-minute career counseling session as early as the next business day.

Avocademy also does not publish details of all instructors or mentors on its website. However, dozens of videos about student success highlight some of the experiences of alumni.

For many at Avocademy, this is not their first attempt at education – nor their first career. Four out of five students are over 25 years old and almost a quarter of students are 35 years old or older.

640 applications. There are so many jobs Paige Thompson applied during a six-week search to complete Avocademy’s UX/UI Fundamentals and Career Jumpstart programs.

“I think it’s extremely important that people fully understand that it’s not an easy change and it’s not an easy industry, but you really get what you put into it, you have to want it,” says Thompson.

After working in sales and marketing, she realized how valuable UX design skills really are and decided to further her education at Avocademy. Join now as a user experience specialist PepsiCoShe says Avocademy equipped her with the skills necessary to succeed in UX even at a Fortune 50 company.

Thompson originally landed at Avocademy because of its affordability, job guarantee through its Career Jumpstart program and its social media presence, among other reasons.

One of the important skills that Avocademy emphasizes – and that is paramount for the real world – is defending your designs, she says. Particularly during the Career Jumpstart program, Thompon says working on client-facing projects and being encouraged to apply to 500 positions per month can be overwhelming, but in the end, it was the push that helped her pursue a new career .

“You are thrown into the fire, but they prepare you for the real world. It’s just frustrating how it happens,” she says.

Overall, Avocademy offers a good foundation in the design thinking process, explains Radia Lahlou, a student who was part of the boot camp’s very first cohort. She says the comprehensive learning opportunities – and affordability – are what originally attracted her to enroll in the program.

Lahlou is now a product designer at a cryptocurrency startup and has even given back to the students by serving as an Avocademy mentor. Her advice for people interested in UX is to pay more attention to design patterns in your everyday life – and understand that not every design process is linear.

“I think one of the great things about design is that you can take skills from other industries and apply them to your work as a designer,” says Lahlou.

Is the Avocademy UX/UI Bootcamp worth it?

If you want to learn UX/UI, Avocademy is a good opportunity. The lessons are all asynchronous, meaning you’ll need discipline and self-motivation to really get the most out of the program. However, if you put in the time and effort, hundreds of graduates have gone on to successful careers in this field at top companies such as Citibank, Deloitte and PepsiCo.

Although details about the curriculum and instructors aren’t as publicly available as some other bootcamps, it’s a positive sign that Avocademy is focused exclusively on UX education. In addition, Avocademy is very career-oriented. Not only are there unlimited mentorship sessions available, but the Career Jumpstart program also has a job guarantee for students who meet all requirements. It may be difficult to find these benefits elsewhere at the same price.
