dramatic pictures of a e scooter explosion in a kitchen has been released to highlight the risks associated with charging batteries.
London Fire Brigade (LFB) published the video showing the moment an e-scooter caught fire while plugged in at a house in Brentnorthwest of London on Saturday.
It only takes a few seconds for the room to fill with flames and smoke.
Security guard Dell Williams, 37, was charging up the electric scooter he bought a fortnight earlier after seeing a listing on the Gumtree online marketplace.
Neither he nor the other tenants living on the property were anywhere near the kitchen when the fire occurred.
He said: โI just want to thank the Lord that we made it out of there in one piece. I am so grateful to be alive.
โI spent eight hours in the hospital for inhaling smoke from the fire.
โWhen I got back home it was like a revelation.
โI was in shock, now I am in shock. I’m so thankful no one else was hurt. I cheated death.”
He added: โDon’t have e-scooters in the house. Charge outside.
LFB deputy commissioner Dom Ellis said this type of fire is becoming more common.
He said: โAs the video shows, once a battery starts to go into thermal runaway, a fire develops very quickly and can block escape routes.
โThermal runaway can lead to battery destruction and a fierce fire.
โWe know that prior to ignition, thermal runaway can cause a variety of gases to be expelled. The white and gray colored smoke is not harmless, and the speed at which these incidents unfold should not be ignored.โ
Users of e-scooters and e-bikes are advised to allow their batteries to cool down before recharging, and to purchase chargers and batteries from reputable sellers.
LFB also urged people to install smoke detectors in areas where charging takes place indoors.
The brigade has been called to 48 electric bike fires and 12 electric scooter fires in the capital so far this year.
Private e-scooters cannot legally be driven on roads or pavements in the UK, but have become commonplace, particularly in urban areas.
Electric scooter rental trials are taking place on the roads of dozens of towns and cities across England.
On Wednesday, Transport Minister Jesse Norman told the Commons Select Committee on Transport that the scooter and electric bike fires are “a matter of great concern” and that the government is “working hard on it”.
He said: โWe’ve had very few fires in (e-scooter) testing, but we’ve had a few.
“Obviously there are broader reports and now there’s a scare right now about e-bikes.”
