What tires will the teams and drivers have for the 2023 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix?


Pirelli have revealed which tires they will be bringing to this weekend’s 2023 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix – matching the choice of compounds last seen in Azerbaijan.

Formula 1’s official tire suppliers have brought the three softest compounds in their range to this weekend’s campaign in Imola, with drivers choosing from C3 (hard tyre), C4 (medium tyre) and C5 (soft tyre).

However, to improve sustainability, Pirelli will conduct a test this weekend new qualification formatThe teams will receive 11 sets of tires instead of 13.

This means that teams will receive three sets of the hard tire marked white, four sets of the medium tire marked yellow and only four sets of the soft tire marked red. Typically, teams are given two sets of hard tires, three sets of medium tires, and eight sets of soft tires.

In dry conditions, the new qualifying format for Imola means drivers must use hard tires in Q1, medium in Q2 and soft tires in Q3.

You’ll also have access to the Intermediates (green) and a new full rain tire (blue), which Pirelli is also bringing with it for the first time, and can be used when the weather calls for it.

“The first round of the 2023 season in Europe will feature two important tire innovations, both aimed at improving the environmental performance of our sport,” said Pirelli’s Motorsport Director Mario Isola.

“The first is about qualifying: at Imola we will be testing a new set of regulations that will require teams to use a different type of compound for each of the three sessions, with hard tires for Q1, medium for Q2 and the soft for Q3 to be adjusted.

“This means a reduction – from 13 to 11 – in the sets of dry tires available to each driver for the entire event, thereby reducing the environmental impact of producing and transporting the tyres.

“Then, with the same aim, a new compound for fully wet tires will be introduced from this Grand Prix, which will not require the use of tire warmers in advance. On-track testing has shown even better performance than the previous Cinturato Blue all-wet tyre, even without the tyre’s electric heater.

“The result of the studies carried out by Pirelli is the first concrete step towards the use of dry tires without preheating. Finally, we decided to bring our range of softer compounds (C3, C4 and C5) to Imola, which could give teams a wider range of strategic options ahead of the race.”
