The Board of the World Endometriosis Society (WES) has announced at its Congress in Edinburgh, that it has selected Sydney to host the World Congress on Endometriosis in May 2025.
The World Endometriosis Society promotes the exchange of clinical and scientific experience, thought, and investigation among those committed to advancing the understanding of endometriosis to improve treatments and quality of life for women with the disease.
Secured by the Australian Society of Endometriosis working with the bidding specialists at BESydney, the Sydney Congress will be held at the International Convention Centre (ICC) Sydney and is set to attract more than 1,000 people to the harbour city, generating an estimated AUD$3.9m in direct expenditure over four days.
Bid leader and clinical president for the Congress, professor of obstetrics and gynaecology UNSW Sydney, Jason Abbott, explains: “The World Congress on Endometriosis is the only congress in the world that focuses solely on endometriosis and the impact it has on all those with the disease. It brings scientists, clinicians, researchers, and patients together into one space with the united goal of finding answers to the disease.”
The Congress will host over 120 plenary presentations.
Professor of life course epidemiology in women’s health at the University of Queensland, Gita Mishra is the scientific president for the Congress and noted it represented an important opportunity to showcase Australia’s progress as the first country to enact a government funded National Action Plan for Endometriosis in 2018, a model has since been adopted by many other countries.
BESydney CEO Lyn Lewis-Smith said, “Sydney was able to create an exceptional team of national representatives from across the spectrum of endometriosis research, clinical care and patient advocacy to lobby for this important event.”
The women’s health discussion will continue on into 2026 in Sydney with the previously announced Asia and Oceania Federation of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (AOFOG) Congress. Sydney has a strong global reputation for its robust health and life sciences industry and ground-breaking facilities such as the Westmead Health and Innovation Precinct which continues to attract important global health events each year.
Coming up on the Sydney calendar in 2023, major health and life science events include the FDI World Dental Congress, World Conference on Family Doctors (WONCA) and the World Congress on Safety and Health at Work.
Tourism Australia managing director, Phillipa Harrison, said securing the 2025 World Congress on Endometriosis with support of the Business Events Bid Fund Programme, was a great outcome.
“We are really pleased to have supported Business Events Sydney through the Business Events Bid Fund Programme to secure this important health and life sciences congress that will also help to consolidate Australia’s pipeline of future business events,” Harrison said.
